They
started rehearsing in San Antonio in 1967 using
a temporary name Willowdale Handcar although prior to this Prince, Cox and Fore
had played together in Corpus Christi
as The New Seeds. The name Bubble Puppy was chosen whilst they were high
on acid at a Hendrix Concert flicking over the pages of Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World'. With their new name they headed for Austin
where they played at the now legendary Vulcan Gas Company but after being
signed by International Artists they moved on to Houston. Their first 45
reached No. 9 in the U.S.
charts in March 1969 and combined hard rock with fresh vocal harmonies. Their
album, which actually reached No. 176 in the U.S. Album Charts, was similar in
style and, although their three subsequent 45s never achieved the success of
the first, they became International Artist's most successful act after the 13th
Floor Elevators.
During
a tour with Steppenwolf
Nick St. Nicholas convinced them to move to California which they did signing to Steppenwolf's
ABC/Dunhill label. Here they changed their name to Demian
issuing an album in 1971. Later in 1977 they reformed as Sirius. However, the
story was not over. They re-emerged in 1987 with a new album which contained
new versions of their old classics as well as fresh material but which frankly
showed them to be a shadow of their former selves.
