Strawberry Alarm Clock

Η μεγάλη αυτή ψυχεδελική μπάντα που γεννήθηκε το 1967 στο Los Angeles κυκλοφόρησε 4 δίσκους με studio ηχογραφήσεις. Το πανέμορφο από πάσης πλευράς Incense and Peppermints του 1967 (μπήκε βέβαια στα charts της εποχής) ακολούθησε το μαγικό Wake Up... It's Tomorrow το 1968. Με τα The World in a Sea Shell το 68 και Good Morning Starshine το 69, έκλεισαν ένα κύκλο ηχογραφήσεων που τους κατέταξε συνολικά για την δουλειά τους απόλυτα δίκαια ως ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα Αμερικάνικα ψυχεδελικά γκρουπς.
Κυκλοφόρησαν βέβαια και άλλοι δίσκοι (συλλογές) τους οποίους δεν έχει νόημα να μνημονέυσω. Δεν θα ήθελα να κουράσω άλλο με κείμενο αφού τις όποιες πληροφορίες χρειάζεστε μπορείτε να τις βρείτε εδώ αλλά και μία συνέντευξη του George Bunnell εδώ και βέβαια για ότι άλλο στο official site της μπάντας.
Ως μαθητής στην τελευταία τάξη του Λυκείου, ένα απόγευμα βρέθηκα σε φιλικό-συγγενικό σπίτι για να δούμε όπως μου είπαν μία ταινία του Jack Nicholson μάλλον με «γιεγιέδες» (ήταν το Psych-Out) . Σε καμία περίπτωση βέβαια δεν περίμενα μία τέτοια εξέλιξη. Καταρχήν «έπαθα» με το τραγούδι στην εισαγωγή του έργου για να ολοκληρωθεί βέβαια η ευχάριστη έκπληξή μου όταν κάποια στιγμή στο έργο έβλεπα έστω και για λίγο χρόνο για πρώτη φορά τους Strawberry Alarm Clock.
Το μόνο που μπόρεσα να βρω σχεδόν άμεσα ήταν το soundtrack της ταινίας ώστε να ακούσω με πάθος τις «φράουλες». Στην πορεία βέβαια αποκτήθηκαν άπαντα (δίσκοι, cd, videos και γενικά ότι έβγαινε) ενώ για καλή μας τύχη οι δύο πρώτοι δίσκοι τους κυκλοφόρησαν επίσημα στην Ελλάδα (από την WEA με κωδικούς MCA 253039-1 και WEA 254873-1). Είχα δε και την τύχη να αποκτήσω και τα Ελληνικά promo από τα πρώτα τους Lp.
Οι Strawberry Alarm Clock ήταν και παραμένουν και θα παραμείνουν για πάντα από τα αγαπημένα μου συγκροτήματα. Ποιος μπορεί να ξεχάσει την νεότητα του?

Strawberry Alarm Clock - Incense and Peppermints (1967)

Αντιγράφω από το επίσημο site της μπάντας… The first LP released by the band and the only LP of their career to make an impact on the album charts, it reached #11 nationally. The LP contained the #1 national hit "Incense And Peppermints" which was written by members Mark Weitz and Ed King with lyrics by John Carter. The song was sung by a friend of the band, Greg Munford who was in Shapes Of Sound and later Crystal Circus. Also on the LP is Steve Bartek who co-wrote many of the songs with George Bunnell and plays flute on some tracks. An excellent LP with some great playing and heavenly harmonies

Strawberry Alarm Clock - Wake Up... It's Tomorrow (1968)

Δεν θα διαφωνήσω σε τίποτα με το κείμενο που υπάρχει στο επίσημο site του γκρουπ. Πρόκειται πραγματικά για ένα εξαιρετικό Lp από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος του. Το θεωρώ το καλύτερό τους.
What many consider to be their finest moments on record, "Wake Up" is an excellent LP from start to end. Much like their first LP, the group dominated the song writting and great tunes are the fore! This was the first LP by the now 5 piece Alarm Clock, Gary Lovetro had left prior to the recording of this LP. Also around this time, the band was featured in the movie "Psych-Out" in which they performed the theme song and played at the club.

Strawberry Alarm Clock - The World in a Sea Shell (1968)

Κατά την ταπεινότατη άποψή μου από αυτό το Lp και μετά οι Strawberry αρχίζουν να «στερεύουν» μουσικά. Τα Love Me Again , Barefoot In Baltimore, Sea Shell, Blues For A Young Girl Gone ξεχωρίζουν κατά την άποψή μου.
Και πάλι από το official site μεταφέρω… The last LP to feature George Bunnell and Randy Seol, who opted out at the end of the recordings. The first side is dominated by outside writters except for "Million Smiles." Side 2 however is pure Alarm Clock and finds the group in some of it's finest moments. "Wooden Woman," "Heated Love," "Eulogy" and "Shallow Impressions" a stunning whirl wind instrumental are among my favorites. When the producers brought in writters outside the group, it broke them up. However most find side 1 boring and uninspired, "Lady Of Lake" was a great song with nice harmonies and that added SAC touch! Soon after Marty Katin came aboard on drums and former Nightcrawlers ("Little Black Egg" & "Basket Of Flowers" their hits) front man Jimmy Pitman on guitar and vocals.

Strawberry Alarm Clock - Good Morning Starshine (1969)

Ξεχάστε ότι ξέρατε μέχρι τώρα για τους Strawberry. Ένας άλλος ήχος εντελώς διαφορετικός σε σχέση με τους άλλους δίσκους. Ωστόσο υπάρχει το Small Package αλλά και το Good Morning Starshine για να μας θυμίζει την εποχή που η flower power κυριαρχούσε στις «φράουλες».
Μεταφέρω και πάλι από το official site της σημειώσει για το Lp…. With this LP the Alarm Clock now had a new sound. Earlier in 1969 Marty Katin was replaced by former member of Thee Sixpence and Strawberry Alarm Clock, Gene Gunnels on drums. The LP features great driving guitars, organ and drums. Not like the previous 3 LP's, this LP is best described as Alarm Clock Rock. Jimmy Pitman's arrival was crucial to the band. He brought in a new sound, a new lead voice and new songs. This was the first LP since their first to feature of picture of the group on the cover. This would also be the last studio LP the Alarm Clock would ever put out. The playing on this LP is outstanding! On songs like "Hog Child" and "Miss Attraction" the guitars/organ/drums are all over the place. "Small Package" sounds like the SAC of old and the end tag is from "California Girls" by the Beach Boys with whom they toured often with in 1967-1968. "Write Your Name In Gold" and "Dear Joy" are outstanding as well! Soon after this LP's release, Jimmy Pitman would leave to form Jumbo and was replaced by Paul Marshall who had been in The Beauchemins and The Tree Toppers.
