Mandrake Memorial

Μεταφέροντας κάποιες πληροφορίες από το ένθετο στο cd της πρώτης τους δισκογραφικής εμφάνισης που κρατώ (Collectables - COL-0691), οι Mandrake Memorial γεννήθηκαν τα τέλη του 1967. Έπαιζαν στην Φιλαδέλφεια, Νέα Υόρκη και Βοστόνη με διάφορα συγκροτήματα (Boston Tea Party, Electric Circus κ.α.) αλλά και ως support group με τους Moby Grape, Fran k Zappa, Big Borither and Holding Company κ.α.

Κατά τα τέλη του 1968 έβγαλαν το ομώνυμο Lp τους το οποίο πούλησε 100 χιλιάδες κόπιες. Αν και ξεκίνησαν ως κουαρτέτο, μετα την κυκλοφορία του 2ου Lp to 1969 αποχώρησε ο Michael Kac (keyboards) για να μείνουν τρίο στην συνέχεια.
Ταξίδεψαν στην Αγγλία όπου μετά από κάποιες επαγγελματικές δυσκολίες, έκαναν κάποιες ηχογραφήσεις μέρος των οποίων παρουσιάστηκαν στο 3ο Lp του γκρουπ.
Μετά τον 3ο δίσκο κυκλοφόρησαν ένα single (το Something in the Air/Musical Man) και διέλυσαν.

Θα μπορούσαμε να χαρακτηρίσουμε τους Mandrake Memorial ως ένα από τα πρώτα ψυχεδελικά progressive groups αφού ήταν από τους πρωτοπόρους στην χρήση συνθεσάιζερ (όταν θα ασχοληθούμε μελλοντικά με τους Silver Apple θα πούμε περισσότερα) ανοίγοντας ουσιαστικά τον δρόμο στις επόμενες μπάντες। Σαφώς και διέφεραν μουσικά από άλλες μπάντες έχοντας ένα προσωπικό ήχο. Αν πάντως με ρωτήσει κανείς πιο από τα 3 Lp μου αρέσει περισσότερο θα του απαντήσω χωρίς δυσκολία, με την σειρά κυκλοφορίας τους. Αναμφίβολα αξίζουν της ιδιαίτερης προσοχής μας। (αν και το 3ο Lp έχει μία δική του δυναμικήπου το κάνει να διαφέρει αρκετά από τα δύο πρώτα).

Mandrake Memorial – Puzzle (1969)

The third and final offering from this Philadelphia act arrived in 1969 after a false start in its recording. Earlier acoustic sessions were ditched in favour of orchestrally backed mood-pieces and ballads. The gentle vocals of Randy Monaco, washes of warping synths and drifting guitar textures provide a floating and dreamy feel to this album. The standout tracks being "Earthfriend" and the recurring "Just A Blur". To experience a serene psychedelic soundscape that defies comparison I don't think you can do better than "Puzzle". As an added bonus the album is dressed in a stunning Escher cover

Mandrake Memorial – Medium (1969)

Excellent second album, that gets more psychedelic. Long weird explorations featuring fuzzed guitar and modular phasing, various keyboards and the highly individual vocals of Randy Monaco. A great album...

Mandrake Memorial - Mandrake Memorial (1968)

From Philadelphia, Mandrake Memorial added a uniquely baroque touch to the usual mix of rock and pop. Their self-titled debut album is absolutely brilliant. The synergy created between the breathless vocals of Randy Monaco, the elaborate keyboard playing of Michael Kac, and the searing guitar work of Craig Anderton, is stunning at times. This amazing musicianship applied to very interesting and melodic original material makes for a very special listening experience. The Mandrake Memorial sound is baroque, exotic, ethereal, and utterly infectious. This first album is definitely an essential possession for fans of psychedelia, and its definitely one to be treasured.
