The Weeds – (aka The Lollipop Shoppe) - The Weeds

Προτιμούσε το The Weeds ή το The Wild Wild Weeds. Με αυτή την «έκδοση» τους ακούμε εδώ που περιέχει την κομματάρα It’s You Time που ηχογραφήθηκε ως The Weeds και είναι ένα πραγματικά άχαστο garage.
Περιέχει όμως το Through My Window που δεν συμπεριλαμβάνεται στο cd.

45s:
1 You Must Be A Witch/Don't Close The Door On Me (UNI 55050) 1967
2 Someone I Know/Through My Window (Shamley 44005) 1969

Orginally from Las Vegas, where they were known as The Weeds they migrated to Portland, Oregon and changed their name when The Seeds' manager Lord Tim took them on. Cole's vocals are very distinctive and your reaction to the album will largely be determined by how you respond to them. The opening cut You Must Be A Witch is reminiscent of Love at their most frantic. Other strong tracks on the album are the slower sensitive punk ballad Underground Railroad, Don't Close The Door On Me and the more commercial Its Only A Reflection. The album has been repressed, and pirated on CD.
They also had two tracks featured on the Angels From Hell soundtrack LP (Tower 5128) - Mr. Madison Avenue and Who's It Gonna Be. The non-LP Shamley 45 is a disappointing 'downer'.
Band leader Fred Cole later formed seventies band Zipper. He remains active on the music scene with the highly regarded cult act Dead Moon.
Compilation appearances have included: You Must Be A Witch on Nuggets Box (4-CD), Nuggets, Vol. 12 (LP), Psychedelic Visions (CD), Pebbles, Vol. 8 (LP), Baubles - Down To Middle Earth (LP), Excerpts From Nuggets (CD), Garage Monsters (LP) and We Have Come For Your Children; Mr. Madison Avenue on Turds On A Bum Ride Vol. 1 & 2 (Dble CD) and Turds On A Bum Ride, Vol. 2 (Dble LP); Who's It Gonna Be on Turds On A Bum Ride Vol. 4 (CD); and both Mr. Maison Avenue and Who's It Gonna Be on Filling The Gap (4-LP).

Tim Buckley - Goodbye and Hello (1967)

Tracks:
1. No Man Can Find The War
2. Carnival Song
3. Pleasant Street
4. Hallucinations
5. I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain
6. Once I Was
7. Phantasmagoria In Two
8. Knight-Errant
9. Goodbye And Hello
10. Morning Glory

The Peppermint Trolley Company - The Peppermint Trolley Co (1968)

Αναζητώντας πληροφορίες για το γκρουπ βρήκα στο garagehangover, mp3 την πρότερης κατάστασής τους που ήταν ως The Mark V, ως The Mark Five, ως The Intercoms αλλά και ως C-Minors.

From Redlands, California The Peppermint Trolley Co. later evolved into Bones and later The Faragher Brothers. The above album is full of bright and breezy pop tunes. It's nothing special, but a pleasant record. Some of their 45s are apparently far superior, and in particular Nine O'Clock Business Man is a great slice of psych/pop.

It's A Beautiful Day - Choice Quality Stuff (1971)

Αυτός είναι ο τρίτος δίσκος των It's A Beautiful Day (έχω ήδη ανεβάσει τον 2ο) ο οποίος διαφέρει αρκετά από τους προηγούμενος. Για να είμαι όσο μπορώ αντικειμενικός θα αναφέρω πως αυτός ο δίσκος κατά την άποψή μου σημαίνει και την μουσική κατηφόρα των It's A Beautiful Day.

One of the leading second-generation San Francisco bands, this group's music was dominated by the excellent violin playing of classically-tutored La Flamme, who also produced their records. Their debut album made an enormous impact and contained the stand out song White Bird. This was one of the classic albums of the era and the twin vocals of La Flamme and Pattie Santos blended together beautifully on tracks like White Bird, Hot Summer Day and Girl With No Eyes. Side Two is dominated by the sleepy, drug-influenced Bulgaria and the Eastern-influenced Bombay Calling, it is slightly marred, however, by a rather tedious drum solo on the final track Time Is.
Linda La Flamme then left the band and Fred Webb was also introduced on keyboards for follow-up Marrying Maiden. Jerry Garcia guested on this record, too, playing banjo and pedal steel guitar. Although inferior to their debut effort, this album contained some fine tracks too, Don And Dewey and Hoedown were effective instrumentals, whilst the laid-back back harmonies of the first LP were in evidence on The Dolphins, Essence of Now, Let A Woman Flow and Do You Remember The Sun?. However, the follow-up Choice Quality Stuff marked a clear downward turn. The laid-back mysticism of their earlier songs had been replaced by a rather unimaginative 'good time' sound. The album had its moments, however - The Grand Camel Suite was a competent instrumental - but it was enormously disappointing. The follow-up live album was unable to reverse this trend and further personnel changes reduced the band to a mere shadow of its former self, as did subsequent albums.
It's A Beautiful Day reformed for a performance at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco on November 29th 1997. The line-up consisted of original members David LaFlamme, Mitch Holman, Val Fuentes and Hal Wagenet, plus long-time vocalist Linda Baker LaFlamme and new keyboardist Larry Blachshere.
Two tracks, Bulgaria and Aquarian Dream appeared on the Fifth Annual Pipe Dream, which was very rare prior to its reissue a few years back. More recently, Matthew Katz's Then And Now, Vol. 1 includes Girl With No Eyes, The Dolphins and a 1980 tribute to John Lennon entitled John. Then And Now, Vol. 2 also contains Aquarian Dream and Wasted Union Blues; and Turds On A Bum Ride Vol. 5 (CD) includes Aquarian Dream.
Bill Gregory had earlier played in New Orleans band Nectar.

Phoenix Opens Its Eyes - First Mars picture

This image, one of the first captured by NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander, shows the vast plains of the northern polar region of Mars. The flat landscape is strewn with tiny pebbles and shows polygonal cracking, a pattern seen widely in Martian high latitudes and also observed in permafrost terrains on Earth. The polygonal cracking is believed to have resulted from seasonal freezing and thawing of surface ice. Phoenix touched down on the Red Planet at 4:53 p.m. Pacific Time (7:53 Eastern Time), May 25, 2008, in an arctic region called Vastitas Borealis, at 68 degrees north latitude, 234 degrees east longitude. This is an approximate-color image taken shortly after landing by the spacecraft's Surface Stereo Imager, inferred from two color filters, a violet, 450-nanometer filter and an infrared, 750-nanometer filter.

Hearts and Flowers were one of the most eclectic groups on the Southern California folk-rock scene in the '60s, skewing more to the folk side of the equation and often adding flourishes of psychedelia and, most importantly, bluegrass and country music. The group was founded by guitarist Larry Murray, a Georgia native who had come to California in the late '50s and played with a bluegrass group called the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers. At various points, the Barkers' membership included Chris Hillman and Bernie Leadon, and they recorded a rare album for Crown in 1962 before breaking up. Murray went on to play in several other bands, including another one with Hillman called the Green Grass Group, before forming Hearts and Flowers with vocalist/guitarist Dave Dawson and vocalist Rick Cunha, who had worked together as a folk duo in Hawaii. The trio played the Los Angeles club scene, sometimes by themselves, sometimes with a rhythm section, and eventually landed a deal with Capitol. Their debut album, Now Is the Time for Hearts and Flowers, was released in 1967 and echoed work by the Byrds, the Stone Poneys, and the Dillards. Its eclectic originals and wide-ranging taste in covers meant that it didn't sell very well, however, and at Capitol's urging, the group underwent an overhaul, adding Terry Paul and Dan Woody to flesh out their live sound, though both left before the group completed its second album. So too did Cunha, who was replaced on guitar by Leadon. The group's sophomore effort, Of Horses, Kids and Forgotten Women, was released in 1968 and featured more elements of pop and psychedelia than their debut, in spite of the fact that the band had taken to playing folk-rock arrangements of country tunes almost exclusively at their live shows. Of Horses didn't sell either, and the group disbanded not long afterward. Murray and Cunha both went on to release solo country-rock albums. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

The Yardbirds – Roger The Engineer (1966)

Σε Αμερική, Γερμανία και Γαλλία ο δίσκος κυκλοφόρησε τότε με τον τίτλο Over Under Sideways Down περιέχοντας 10 κομμάτια (χωρίς τα Rack My Mind και Nazz Are Blue).

Personnel:
Keith Relf – lead vocals (except "The Nazz Are Blue"), harmonica
Jeff Beck – lead guitar, bass (on "Over, Under, Sideways, Down"), lead vocals (on "The Nazz Are Blue")

Stone the Crows - Stone the Crows (1969)

Επέλεξαν πάντως για όνομα (αρχικά όπως λέει και το Αγγλικό κείμενο ήταν ως The Power αλλά μεσολάβησε για την αλλαγή ο μάνατζερ των Zeppelin) ένα ιδιωματισμό που χρησιμοποιούν στην πατρίδα τους αντίστοιχο με το To Hell with It. Πάντως ακούστε και το Fool on the Hill και προσπαθήστε να θυμηθείτε μία άλλη φωνή.

This Scottish group set out playing blues/heavy rock and were originally known as The Power. They were 'discovered' by Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant whilst gigging at clubs and air bases in Europe. He renamed them Stone The Crows and they signed a record deal with Polydor. The original line-up cut two tight soul-based albums. Les Harvey was a fine guitarist and Maggie Bell's raucous vocals gave them a winning blend. Both albums are well worth checking out but didn't get the critical acclaim they deserved, a factor clearly instrumental in the departure of Jim Dewar and John McGinnis in February 1971. Leahy and Thompson came in as replacements. Thompson had previously played in John Mayall's band as had Colin Allen.

The Teenage Licks album made a greater impression than their previous efforts and with Maggie Bell widely acclaimed as Britain's Top Girl Singer in 1972 things really seemed to be heading upwards for the band until Les Harvey was tragically killed on stage by a 'live' microphone during a gig at Swansea University. Jimmy McCulloch (ex-Thunderclap Newman) was drafted in as a replacement and their next album 'Ontinuous Performance was completed by this new line-up. Sadly commercial success continued to elude them and they eventually called it a day during 1973. Maggie Bell launched a solo career but never achieved the success her talent suggested. Jimmy McCulloch joined Joe Soap and later Wings. Stone The Crows can also be heard playing Raining In Your Hearts and Sad Mary on Polydor's 1971 compilation Bombers and Fool On The Hill on Rock Party, which appeared the same year.

The Orient Express - Orient Express (1969)

BRUNO GIET electric minitar, vcls A
FARSHID GOLESORKHI electric melodica, dumbek, tympani, vcls A

ALBUM:
1(A) ORIENT EXPRESS (Mainstream S/6117) 1969
NB: (1) counterfeited on vinyl in the late eighties and on CD (Head 2796) 199?.

Originally from Europe this band moved to the States. Guy Duris was actually born on the Left Bank and later met Golesorkhi, who had been decorated by the Shah of Iran for his drumming and was interested in applying Eastern rhythms to Western music, in Iran. They met Bruno Giet, a Belgian pilot and guitarist, in Paris while travelling around Europe. Soon the three members headed for America and settled in New York's East Village initially but ended up in California where their album was recorded. It's powerful Eastern-influenced psychedelia similar to Kaleidoscope.

Particularly fine examples of their marriage of Eastern and Western music are Train To Bombay and For A Moment. This album is highly recommended. They did not release any singles on Mainstream.
This act should not be confused with Liz Damon's Orient Express, who were from Hawaii and played cabaret music. They issued one album Liz Damon And The Orient Express (Anthem) 1970, and at least three singles: Loneliness Remembers/Quiet Sound (Anthem 51005) 1970, All In All/Walking Backwards Down The Road (Anthem 51006) 1970, and 1900 Yesterday/You're Falling In Love (White Whale ).

The Association - The Association's Greatest Hits (1968)

Κομμάτια σαν το Never My Love ή το No Fair at All.

Beyond representing the best in '60s California pop, the Association blazed trails in album production and the folk-psychedelia genre. With the guidance of L.A. producers Bones Howe, Curt Boetticher, and Jerry Yester, the band deftly mixed airy harmonies, unobtrusive rhythm tracks, and subtle "Age of Aquarius" accents from harpsichords, Farfisa organs, fuzz-box guitars, trumpets, and bongos -- at times, the sophisticated blend was held together by L.A. session players. And while the group successfully expanded their harmonic horizons on "Requiem for the Masses," they also went a bit beyond their strengths with Jefferson Airplane-esque rockers like "Six Man Band." Luckily, the majority of this hits collection focuses on the band's dreamy combination of polished folk, limber vocal arrangements, and wide-screen instrumental backdrops. The summery program also includes chart-toppers like "Windy," "Cherish," "Along Comes Mary," and "Never My Love," along with progressive pop-and-harmony tracks like "No Fair at All," "Everything That Touches You," and "Time for Livin'." A great introduction to the band's prime work from the latter half of the '60s. ~ Stephen Cook,

The Leaves – Hey Joe (1966)

Beatlemania influenced Jim Pons to put together a band called The Rockwells, in 1964, whilst at San Fernando State College (California), using the $1,000 he was awarded following an automobile lawsuit. The original line-up soon set about performing classics like Louie, Louie and Twist And Shout at frat parties. The band's quest for self-improvement soon led them to add John Beck and replace Jimmy Kern with Tom Ray.
The band's break came when they got a residency at Ciro's in L.A. They then chose a new name The Leaves and had posters designed with pictures of themselves and a marijuana leaf saying 'The Leaves Are Happening'. Pat Boone heard them playing at the club one night and signed them for his Penthouse Production Company. Through this The Leaves were first signed to Mira and released their debut single Too Many People/Love Minus Zero. The 'A' side was a hit in Los Angeles.
The Leaves were the first band to release Hey Joe as a single. They made two previous recordings of Hey Joe before the third fuzztone version, which reached No. 31 in the U.S. charts. By now, Bobby Arlin had replaced Bill Rhinehart on guitar. The Leaves had now won a residency at the Whisky A Go Go in L.A., where they topped the bill, which on occasions included The Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company and Quicksilver Messenger Service. In 1965 when they appeared at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, The Rolling Stones opened for them!
However, their follow-up single Get Out Of My Life Woman was less successful. 1966 saw Robert Lee Reiner become an acid casualty and he left the band. They continued as a quartet, but they lacked the fullness of sound necessary to make them click.
Then they signed for Capitol to produce a second album, augmented by studio musicians and strings. It contained some of their best material including Lemon Princess and Twilight Sanctuary, (issued on their last single), but it did not sell and Pons left during its recording to join The Turtles. Pons later did work with Frank Zappa. Beck and Arlin went on to produce a song called Dead Time Bummer Blues which was never released. Arlin later formed the power-trio, The Hook.
Compilation appearances have included: Hey Joe on Mayhem & Psychosis, Vol. 2 (LP), Nuggets From Nuggets (CD), Nuggets - Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968 (Dble LP), Nuggets, Vol. 1 (LP), Excerpts From Nuggets (CD), Garage Monsters (LP), Tough Rock and Wild Thing; Love Minus Zero on Mindrocker, Vol. 5 (LP); Hey Joe and Too Many People on Nuggets Box (4-CD); Too Many People on Nuggets, Vol. 2 (LP); and Lemon Princess on Psychedelic Perceptions (CD).

The Jacks - Vacant World (1968)

The Jacks were a 1960s Japanese psychedelic rock group who released their most well known studio album Vacant World (or 'No Sekai' in Japanese) in 1968. The Jacks, originally known as Nightingale, began their career in 1966 as a folk trio. After jazz drummer Takasuke Kida joined the group they headed into a new musical direction. Though internationally obscure, the group was successful in Japan. Vacant World, which yielded the hit single 'Marianne', is widely seen as one of the most important Japanese rock albums of the era. The song 'Vacant World' (or 'Karappo no Sekai' in Japanese) was famously banned from Japanese airwaves due to lyrical content. The Jacks' musical legacy has carried on in Japan despite the fact that their career was quite short, disbanding shortly after the release of their second studio album Super Session (or 'No Kiseki' in Japanese).

Vacant World ('No Sekai' in Japanese) released in 1968, is the first album released by the 1960s Japanese rock band the Jacks. It is generally seen as a high mark for the band and an early classic amongst the 1960s & 1970s Japanese psychedelic rock movement that followed. During the late '60s, the album enjoyed success within Japan. It is currently in print by Toshiba/EMI and available internationally by import only.

Zoo - Zoo (1969)

Great British Psychedelic Trip, Vol. 1- 1966-1969

Το Volume 2 είναι ουσιαστικά το βινύλιο του The British Psychedelic Trip, Vol.4 1965-1970 με κάποια bonus tracks.

Even though these artists might not have made an impact equal to that of The Who, The Small Faces or Love and the 13th Floor Elevators, they certainly were kindred spirits in a sonic sense. While there is nary a dud amongst the 26 tracks on this compilation, there are a few most exceptional works worthy of revisitation. Most notably are the Californians cover of Warren Zevon's "Follow Me" -- which he recorded with Tule Livingston under the guise of Lyme & Cybelle. This rendering is an inspired harpsichord-driven and tambourine tapping masterpiece and would have been the ultimate vehicle for The Monkees. "Red Sky At Night" -- not to be confused with a similarly titled song by the Fixx -- is among the heavier pieces on this volume. With the noir aura of King Crimson and ravaged fretwork reminiscent of Black Sabbath, The Accents unleash a track that pre-dates heavy metal by nearly two years.

There are also a few early appearances from artists who would later go on to more notable things. If the song title "Baked Jam Roll In Your Eye" sounds extraordinary enough to have been a Rutles parody, the reality is that the band Timebox was a seminal stomping ground for both Pete "Ollie" Halsall(bass) and John Halsey (drums) -- who co-wrote the track. Despite the absurd name, this up-tempo performance contains a Halsey-led rhythm akin to something Dave Clark might have been able to pull off. The track "Shades Of Orange" was co-composed by Rolling Stone Bill Wyman during the brief period that he managed The End -- a project taken on at the urging of Stones producer Glyn Johns. Indeed, the song sounds steeped in the Stones Their Satanic Majesties Request, because, according to Dinnes Cruickshank's fascinating liner notes essay, it was worked up as the band was preparing that album. It has also appeared on numerous bootlegs as a ‘lost' Rolling Stones piece. Tragically, The Great British Psychedelic Trip series has been out of print since the mid ‘90s. A scouring of used CD bins has been known to produce copies, presumably picked over by consumers looking for top shelf and well-known artists.

Hen's Teeth - Vol. 1 Rare Psychedelicacies From The Golden Age

Θα αναφέρω μόνο το Moving in a Circle που ακούω αυτή την στιγμή και είναι πανέμορφο αλλά και το Getting Old των Svensk που για μένα πλέον θα είναι «επίκαιρο».

Tracks:
1. The David - "Light of Your Mind" (2:49)
2. Matadors - "Get Down from the Tree" (3:25)
3. Alan Avon and the Toy Shop - "A Night to Remember" (4:31)
4. Svensk - "Getting Old" (2:07)
5. Junior's Eyes - "The Black Snake" (2:37)
6. Enough's Enough - "Please Remember" (2:08)

Hearts and Flowers - Now Is The Time For (1967)

An excellent and still underrated group from Los Angeles, Hearts and Flowers produced two albums mixing folk rock with Californian harmonies and country folk.
Born in Weycross, Georgia, Larry Murray moved to Los Angeles in the late fifties and joined the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers, one of the several Bluegrass groups playing the Southern California circuit. The personnel of the Barkers fluctuated and included future Byrd Chris Hillman, Kenny Wertz and Bernie Leadon. The group disbanded in 1962 after releasing an album for the Crown label, Bluegrass Favorites, which is now extremely rare.

Murray temporarily retired from the music scene, became a TV actor and worked at the Troubadour Club in L.A.. In 1965 he met a folk/rock duo formed of David Dawson and Rick Cunha and they started working together and playing live without a drummer. They secured a deal with Capitol and their first album was released in June 1967. Masterfully produced by Nick Venet (Fred Neil, Stone Poneys, Euphoria, Mad River), Now Is The Time For Hearts And Flowers is a real gem. The choice of material is outstanding, with excellent covers of Tim Hardin's Reason To Believe, Hoyt Axton's 10,000 Sunsets, Carole King's Road To Nowhere and Donovan's Try For The Sun, plus two songs of contemporary groups: Please, the Kaleidoscope song and Rock And Roll Gypsies by Gypsy Trips. Their original songs were penned by Murray, Cunha and Marty Cooper. The vocals are brilliant and Venet added some good production tricks, with some effects, violin and electric bass.
The sales were unfortunately extremely poor and Capitol decided to give them a push: two new members, Terry Paul and Dan Woody, were drafted to reinforce their live impact and a promotion campaign began at the end of 1967; with limited results.

Murray and Dawson started working on their second album. Cunha, Paul and Woody left and Bernie Leadon arrived. Of Horses, Kids and Forgotten Woman was released in July 1968 and got the same results as the first album: critical acclaim but low sales. It notably contains She Sang Hymns Out Of Tune, a song originally recorded (but not released) by Jesse Lee Kincaid with the Rising Sons.
Due to their lack of success, the group disbanded and their records sank into obscurity before being rediscovered in the mid-eighties by Bam Caruso.
Larry Murray went on to record a good country folk/rock album, Sweet Country Suite (Verve Forecast FTS 3090) 1969, with backing by Swampwater, Paul Parrish, JD Souther and two Nitty Gritty members, Fadden and McEuen). He also worked with Kris Kristofferson and Jessi Colter in the early seventies. Rick Cunha would later work with Linda Ronstadt, have a career as a songwriter and sesion man and also released two decent country rock albums: Cunha Songs (GRC GA 5004) 1973, with Dave Dawson and Moving Pictures (CBS ) 1977.
Compilation appearances include: Rock 'N' Roll Gypsies on Nuggets, Vol. 10 (LP) and Rock A Delics (LP).

The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat (1968)

Μέσα στις πειραματικές αναζητήσεις του σε διάφορα κομμάτια στο δίσκο, θα σταθώ στο "Here She Comes Now" που μου αρέσει ιδιαίτερα.

After the disappointing sales of The Velvet Underground's first album, The Velvet Underground and Nico, the band's relationship with Andy Warhol weakened. The Velvets toured most of late 1967. Many of their live performances featured noisy improvisations that would become key elements in White Light/White Heat. The band eventually fired Andy Warhol and Nico, and went on to record their second album with a new producer. The album was recorded in just two days, and with a noticeably different style than The Velvet Underground and Nico. It briefly appeared on the Billboard Top 200, only managing to reach the 199th position. Despite its poor sales, the distorted, feedback-driven, and roughly recorded sound on White Light/White Heat has since become a large influence on punk and experimental rock. It ranks at #159 at Rate Your Music's Top Albums of All Time. In 2003, the album was ranked number 292 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. It has also gained a cult following among many fans of the album.

Nearly every song on the album contains some sort of experimental or avant-garde quality. "The Gift", for example, contains a recital of a short story and a loud instrumental rock song playing simultaneously in two separate stereo channels. "I Heard Her Call My Name" is notable for its distorted guitar solos and prominent use of feedback. The album is also memorable for Lou Reed's lyrics, which often focus on themes of drug use and sexual absurdity, including the song "Lady Godiva's Operation", about a drag queen's botched lobotomy, and the title track "White Light/White Heat", which glorifies the use of amphetamine.

The albums' last track is "Sister Ray" on which Reed tells a tale of absolute debauchery, while the band plays an improvised 17 minute jam around 3 chords verging between glam/punk and pure minimalist drone rock. The album cover to White Light/White Heat is a faint image of a tattoo of a skull. The subtle picture of the tattooed arm was photographed, enlarged and distorted by Billy Name, one of Andy Warhol's "Factory" members. It is difficult to distinguish the tattoo, as the image is black, printed on a slightly lighter black background. There also exists a unique MGM UK cover made from the late 70's to the early 80's featuring a white background and abstract toy soldiers.

The Children – Rebirth (1968)

Θα ξεχωρίσω το κομμάτι Beautiful που είναι όνομα και πράμα (μακράν για την αισθητική μου το καλύτερο κομμάτι) αλλά και το I'll Be Your Sunshine που δικαιολογεί απόλυτα την φωτό με τα βιολιά.

One of the more commercial acts to come from San Antonio, Texas in the 1960s, Perron, Cabaza, Szuch, Trieber and Holzhaus had all previously been with The Mind's Eye. It had been speculated that Bill Ash (ex-The Stoics) had been in The Children as a version of The Stoics Enough Of What I Need appeared on the flip of The Children's first single. Chris Holzhaus has, however, told us that he played on all The Children's recordings, and that Bill Ash had only been an early member of The Mind's Eye.
Mike Marechal replaced Trieber after Trieber was killed in a drag boat accident at McQueeney Lake outside San Antonio Texas in '68.

Their second 45 was taken from their album - a collection of pleasant pop and psychedelia produced by Lelan Rodgers. There may also have been a test pressing for an LP on Ode. Cassell Webb was later in Saddlesore and went on to production work and a solo career. She is now based in the UK. Perron also enjoyed a brief solo career but sadly committed suicide, whilst Holzhaus went on to Eastwood Review.
There's also a CD with Thursdays Children entitled Stoned Sixties. It was released on Collectables (COL-CD-0600).

Compilation appearances include: Francene on '69 Love-In (CD); and Enough Of What I Need on Highs In The Mid Sixties, Vol. 23 (LP) and Acid Visions - The Complete Collection Vol. 1 (3-CD).
The Children's cover of Ian Whitcomb's This Sporting Life on Boulders, Vol. 5 and Ya Gotta Have Moxie, Vol. 1 (Dble CD) is by a different L.A. band.

Tales of Justine - Petals From A Sunflower (1997, recorded 1967-68)

45:
1 Albert/Monday Morning (some PS) (HMV POP 1614) 1967

The roots of this band lay in an outfit called The Court Jesters, who were formed in the wake of the British beat boom by a group of friends at Mount Grace School in Potter's Bar, Hertfordshire. By the end of 1966, they were galvanised by the new drug inspired sounds from the States and, after various personnel changes, changed their name to Tales Of Justine. Now one of the first wave of authentic English psychedelic groups they became a regular attraction at Happening 44 and The Electric Garden, which later became The Middle Earth Club. One of their managers, Martin Wilcox drew them to EMI employee Tim Rice's attention (at that point he was an A&R man, trainee record producer and Norrie Paramor's assistant) and he arranged for them to record at EMI's Abbey Road studios. Prior to this, they made an impromptu appearance on stage at the International Love-in at Alexandria Palace (which was pretty much a repeat of the Fourteen Hour Technicolour Dream, which had taken place at the same venue three months earlier), when Pink Floyd's set ended prematurely as Syd Barrett was barely functioning. Three days later they entered EMI's studios for a recording test. They put down five cuts: the inconsequential lightweight pop Albert (A Pet Sunflower), three more idiosyncratic numbers Sunday School, Music To Watch Us By and Obselete Incident with suitably surreal lyrical observations, but it's the organ-driven Evil Woman which really catches the ears. They returned again, about a fortnight after the original session to re-record a faster, slightly less languid version of Albert backed by the far superior Monday Morning, which came with a David Daltrey sitar solo and a superb arrangement. Bizarrely, it became the penultimate pop release on EMI's decidedly unhip HMV label.

In the weeks following the recording Bruce Hurford had to leave the band and was later tragically killed in a road accident. He was replaced by Paul Locke. They recorded an acetate of Sitting On A Blunstone, a delightful slice of psychedelic pop with a guitar solo from David Daltrey as a publishing demo at the offices of Southern Music. John Peel played it on his Top Gear show but incredibly EMI refused to give what was the band's magnum opus an official release. By now, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber were hard at work on "Joseph And The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat" and persuaded David Daltrey to take lead part on the disc and show. This increasing attention on Daltrey distanced him from the rest of the group, although they returned to Abbey Road on 12th December 1968 to record four more appealing flower-pop songs - Aurora, Morpheus, Pathway and Something Special - which EMI unfortunately decided were too idiosyncratic for mass public consumption, the omens were not good. Further sessions were held, but EMI's unwillingness to release any further material eventually led to the group's demise.
Daltrey went on to record some singer-songwriter demos and later formed a band called Carillion, who played a Byrds-influenced brand of rock and supported David Bowie on his Ziggy Stardust tour. Daltrey departed when no record contract was forthcoming and Carillion later evolved into Starry Eyed and Laughing.
All of Tales Of Justine's studio recordings can now be heard on Petals From A Sunflower which is recommended listening if you like flower-pop.
Compilation appearances have included: Sitting On A Bluestone on Psychedelia, Vol. 4 (LP) and Hen's Teeth, Vol. 3 (CD); Monday Morning on Psychedelia At Abbey Road (CD).
