Jeremy Harmer - Idiosyncratics And Swallows Wings (1967)

Για σήμερα έχουμε το πρώτο Lp του Jeremy Harmer που είναι private press και τυπώθηκε σε μόλις 99 κόπιες με την τιμή του από οτι είδα πριν λίγο να ξεπερνά τα 400 γιουρος. Ηχογραφήθηκε στο Νόριτς σε ένα στούντιο του BBC. Πανέμορφος δίσκος, όπου θα καταλάβετε αμέσως το τι άκουγε τότε ο αξεπέραστος Nick Drake, πριν κυκλοφορησει τα μεγαλουργήματά του.

Μακρά η πορεία του. Η οποία ξεκξίνησε στα 11 όταν του έκαναν για Χριστουγεννιάτικο δώρο μία κιθάρα, για να γράψει το πρώτο του τραγούδι στα 14. Στο Λύκειο ήταν σε μπάντα αλλά μόλις πήγε στο Πανεπιστήμιο και άκουσε Bert Jansch, το νερό μπήκε στο αυλάκι και ως φοιτητής πλέον έβγαλε αυτό το δίσκο. Διάβασα οτι έχει και ένα άγνωστο δίσκο τυπωμένο στο Μεξικό διότι μάλλον έζησε εκεί ως καθηγητής Αγγλικών.

Jeremy Harmer is as a singer-songwriter, musician and performer of the spoken word but also a writer, presenter, teacher and trainer in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT).

Jeremy Harmer has a long history as a singer/songwriter and as an actor/performer, quite apart from his work in the field of English language teaching.

He was given his first guitar as a Christmas present when he was 11. He wrote his first song (Together in love) when he was 14. During his school years he was a member of a Shadows-inspired pop group The Four Squares. But it was when he got to university and heard players like Bert Jansch that he started to take the guitar seriously.

After university (during which time he wrote music for shows by playwright Snoo Wilson, played in folk clubs around East Anglia, and appeared on Anglia TV to showcase songs from his LP Idiosyncratics and Swallows Wings), Jeremy played in clubs in and around London before heading out to Mexico to work as an English language teacher. In Mexico he played in clubs and theatres in both Mexico City and Guadalajara.

Acting (at school an university) took him, via the University of East Anglia, to the Edinburgh Festival. Later he had leading roles in the Bar Theatrical Society (London) and Theatre Workshop (Mexico City).

Since returning to the UK Jeremy has continued to play and write songs, and he has recorded two CDs of songs: More than ever (2015) and Other Loves (2013). He sings regularly in and around Cambridge UK, and abroad. He also performs regularly with violinist Steve Bingham with whom he recorded Touchable Dreams Ð a collection of music and poetry. He has narrated works in performance with The Ely Sinfonia, City of Peterborough Symphony Orchestra and the Bingham Quartet.

His oratorio Island (written in conjunction with Phil Toms) had its premiere in Ely cathedral (UK) in March 2015. --otherloves.co.uk

Dale R. Benson - Zegro (197x)

Ακόμα ένας loner καλλιτέχνης παίρνει σήμερα σειρά. Ο Dale R. Benson με το σπάνιο και αρκετά ακριβό δισκάκι του (δεν θυμάμαι να μπήκε ποτέ σε άλλο blog), ένα private press  μάλλον απο την Μινεσότα χωρίς όμως να ξέρουμε έτος κυκλοφορίας.

Απο κει πέρα όσο και αν έψαξα δεν έχω κάτι άλλο να σας αναφέρω. Το κλίμα του δίσκου σας είναι κατανοητό και μόνο από τη λέξη loner που εκφράζει το είδος και το ύφος του. Εύχομαι καλή ακρόαση σε όλους σας.

Christopher Montgomery - Connecticut Elegy (1971)

Η σημερινή ανάρτηση αφορά του εραστές των loner downer folkers. Ο συγκεκριμένος δίσκος (που φυσικά δεν έχω) αποτελεί μία private press κυκλοφορία σε λιγότερο από 100 αντίτυπα, απο το Κονέκτικατ το 1971. Η αγορά μίας τέτοιας κόπιας πριν λίγο που είδα στο discogs έχει φτάσει τα 680 ευρώ. 

Βέβαια μεσολάβησαν πριν λίγα χρόνια οι θρασύτατοι αρχιαπατεώνες της Κορεάτικης Big Pink records που θησαύρισαν στις πλάτες καλλιτεχνών και το κυκλοφόρησαν σε cd το 2011. Οι όποιες πληροφορίες υπάρχουν έρχονται ουσιαστικά από την αναφορά του Acid archives που παραθέτω.

Little-known but interesting loner/fringe urban folk trip full of quirky snapshots from the bleak early 1970s. Lyrics are offbeat with plenty of surprising Dylanesque twists but generally deal with garbage, city desolation, unhealthy relationships and religious apocalypse all radiating from the guy's bedroom. Stripped down demo sound with just steelstringed guitar and a quite passable voice. Comparable to Perry Leopold's "Cold in Philly" track but not quite as heavy, yet clearly better than something like Geoffrey. Recurring sense of irony and overall artistic vision makes you sympathize with the guy's total obscurity. Sample lyric: "I saw eternity the other night/And I tell you, it scared me shitless". 50+ minutes of Connecticut agoraphobia.

Darragh Nagle - Lapis (1975)

Για σήμερα ένα δισκάκι από τα ... κρυμμένα. Ξέρετε από εκείνα που σκάει μύτη ένα κομμάτι στο tube και τρέχα γύρευε. Και βέβαια όπως έχετε καταλάβει παίζει ρόλο και ποιός το εμφανίζει στο tube. Ναι όλα παίζουν το ρόλο τους.   

Εχουμε λοιπόν αυτή την κυκλοφορία του Darragh Nagle που είναι ένα από τα πολλά private pressing. Αυτό με καταγωγή από την Αριζόνα αν και ο Darragh ήταν απο το Σικάγο. Πληροφορίες μόνο στο οπισθόφυλλο και στο Αγγλικό κείμενο παρακάτω.  Περιεχόμενο δίσκου όμορφο και φυσικά φολκ όλων των αποχρώσεων. Δηλαδή θα ακούσετε το μελωδικό στοιχείο και την κάντρι πλευρά και την λόνερ και την ψυχ αλλά και την χίππικη, την δεξιοτεχνία του κιθαρωδού με πρόσμιξη ηλεκτρονικών ήχων ενώ υπάρχει βέβαια και το  περίεργο ηλεκτρονικό άσμα «Echo Of Wind».

Πλήρες το περιεχόμενο σε ένα δίσκο που περιμένεις να ακούσεις το επόμενο κομμάτι με προσμονή. Να προσθέσω επίσης ο,τι για κάποιον που ακούει το δίσκο πρώτη φορά, θα καταλάβει την έννοια του private press. Δηλαδή την τυχαία ακολουθία στο στυλ των κομματιών που δεν υπάρχει στους δίσκους των εταιρειών. Ο καλλιτέχνης εδώ είναι ελεύθερος να εκφραστεί όπως θέλει, έξω από τις εμπορικές νόρμες.

Στο tube υπήρχαν δύο κομμάτια (ουσιαστικά ένα) αλλά ανέβασα και εγώ άλλο ένα, αυτό που σας έβαλα εδώ. Θα ευχηθώ καλή ακρόαση σε όλους σας.

Darragh Nagle - Horse Mesa (1975)

Darragh arrived on planet earth in Chicago, in 1954, and headed west at the age of two. He grew up in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Darragh studied computer programming in high school and college, and has been working in computer programming since 1972. He works in unix applications, kernels, and networking.

Darragh started exploring music during childhood, and was writing songs and playing guitar by age 10. He went on to study music formally in high school chorus, and as a music composition major at the University of New Mexico and Arizona State University. Darragh became a folksinger, and he made the recordings "Lapis", "Starcrystal", "Dragon Dreams", "The Land of Faerie", and "Darragh Live at Heartland Festival". He has had the pleasure of performing with singers such as Steve Goodman, Elaine Silver, and Gwydion Penderwynn. Darragh has been singing for organizations to promote positive social growth and healing heart wisdom, including Results, Noetic Sciences, The Pilgrimage healing center, and festivals around the nation. He continues to use the heart-mind-body connection, good spirits and comedy to bring the healing powers of happiness and spirit path awareness.
