Howard Phillips Lovecraft

Αυτός ο κύριος ενέπνευσε και ουσιαστικά «ευθύνεται» για την δημιουργία του περίφημου ψυχεδελικού συγκροτήματος των H. P. Lovecraft το οποίο και αγαπώ ιδιαίτερα.

HOWARD PHILLIPS LOVECRAFT (20 August 1890–15 March 1937) , is probably best known as a writer of weird fiction, but some believe his voluminous correspondence to be his greatest accomplishment.
Born in Providence, Lovecraft was a sickly child whose parents died insane. When he was 16, he wrote the astronomy column in the Providence Tribune. Between 1908 and 1923, he wrote short stories for Weird Tales magazine, among others. He died in Providence, in poverty, on March 15, 1937. His most famous novel is considered to be "At the Mountains of Madness," about an expedition to the South Pole, which discovers strange creatures beneath a mountain.

H.P. Lovecraft - H.P. Lovecraft (1967)

Το πρώτο από τα δύο εξαιρετικά Lp των H.P. Lovecraft παίρνουν σήμερα σειρά στο blog μου. Η τεράστια αυτή ψυχεδελική μπάντα αν και δημιουργήθηκε στο Chicago (Illinois) το 1967, μετακόμισαν την αμέσως επόμενη χρονιά στο San Francisco για να δημιουργήσουν…μουσική. Δίχως άλλο μας προσέφεραν δύο καταπληκτικά acid-folk-rock Lp’s. Μία παρουσίαση του πρώτου αλλά και του δεύτερου Lp μπορείτε να διαβάσετε εδώ.

Η εταιρεία Polygram τύπωσε ανέλπιστα πριν αρκετά χρόνια στην Ελλάδα τους δύο πρώτους δίσκους ( LP 822 577-1 και (LP 830543-1) που αγόρασα εκείνη την περίοδο. Εκτός του live Lp το οποίο επίσης παραθέτω παρακάτω, το γκρουπ είχε ακόμα δύο κυκλοφορίες σαν Lovecraft, το Valley of the Moon το 1970 και το We Love You Whoever You Are το 1975 χωρίς όμως ενδιαφέρον για μένα.

Είχα την τύχη από τον Θεόσταλτο εκείνο άνθρωπο, να παίρνω σχεδόν κάθε βδομάδα πολλές κασέτες, με συνέπεια το σχολείο την τελευταία χρονιά να το φορτώσω στο κόκορα (που μυαλό, ευτυχώς τουλάχιστον βρήκα τον καθηγητικό μου δρόμο αργότερα). Προφανώς μου έγραφε ότι καλύτερο υπήρχε αλλιώς δεν εξηγείται το γεγονός (όπως αποδείχτηκε αργότερα δηλαδή) πως από το 81-83 να έχω ακούσει σχεδόνότι καλύτερο είχε βγει από τα ψυχεδελικά χρόνια। Όπως έχω αναφέρει και άλλες φορές το πρόβλημα ήταν ότι δεν συμβάδιζα μουσικά με τις παρέες μου (δεν το μετάνιωσα ποτέ βέβαια) γεγονός που μουσικά με απομόνωσε। Ήμουν για αυτούς μόνιμα εκτός τόπου και χρόνου...

Οι H.P. Lovecraft είναι προφανές ότι έχουν συνδεθεί μαζί μου από τα χρόνια της νεότητας. Τους έχω μέσα στους κορυφαίους δημιουργούς των χρυσών ετών της δεκαετίας του 60. Παρά το γεγονός ότι τα «πρώτα χρόνια» που άκουγα ψυχεδέλια δεν είχα την ποικιλία ήχων και απόψεων τους θεωρούσα κορυφαίους. Στα αυτιά μου ηχούσε κάτι το μεστό και πιο ψαγμένο. Δυσκολία είχα στο να καταλάβω τους στίχους. Όπως έχω πει παλιότερα δεν υπήρχε η δυνατότητα πέραν του οπισθόφυλλου να αντλήσουμε τότε άλλες πληροφορίες για μία μπάντα. Να είναι καλά το net όμως.

Είναι προφανές ότι κάθε Δευτέρα τουλάχιστον 3-4 κομμάτια των H.P. Lovecraft θα ακουστούν στο μπαράκι που παίζω. Δεν γίνεται αγαπητοί επισκέπτες να μην ακουστούν. Σαφώς και στην κοινωνία της Χίου (συμπλήρωσα ένα χρόνο μόνιμος κάτοικος στο νησί) τα ψυχεδελικά ακούσματα ξενίζουν, αλλά και που τα θεωρούν οικεία?

Τhis is one of the best psychedelic albums, with strong material that shows the immediately identifiable Edwards-Michaels vocal tandem at its best. According to the LP notes, the songs were largely inspired by novelist H.P. Lovecraft's "macabre tales and poems of Earth populated by another race." It's more haunting than gloomy, though, with deft touches of folk, jazz, and horns.

Hp Lovecraft - Live May 11, 1968 (1968)

Σαφώς και είναι ένα αξιολογότατο Lp. Καταρχήν θα συμφωνείτε ότι μας έχουν δοθεί ελάχιστες ευκαιρίες για να ακούσουμε συγκροτημένο live από εκείνη την εποχή. Δεν εννοώ κάτι αποσπασματικό μέσα από ένα Woodstock κ.λ.π. Εννοώ σαν επίσημο live Lp μιας μπάντας. Επίσης δεν πρέπει να παραγνωρίζουμε τα πενιχρά (σε σύγκριση με σήμερα) τεχνικά μέσα της εποχής τόσο στην ηχογράφηση όσο και στην παραγωγή του ήχου. Για τα δικά μου γούστα το live αυτό ανταποκρίνεται απόλυτα στα στάνταρτς που έθεσαν οι Hp Lovecraft στο πρώτο του Lp. Είναι εξίσου δυνατό μουσικά. Ποιος μπορεί να διαφωνήσει ότι η εκτέλεση του The Bag I’m In είναι ανώτερη από το Lp?
Blessed with one of the best live recording qualities one can hear from '60s efforts -- especially considering that H।P। Lovecraft was never a major success -- Live May 11, 1968 provides a reasonable alternate way for the curious to find out what the shouting was all about। Split almost evenly between first and second album material, and featuring then-new bassist Jeff Boyan (brought in to replace Jerry McGeorge), this release shows that the quintet certainly had something। If there are plenty of moments where the addictive blend of garage jamming and mindblown psychedelia seems on the verge of collapsing into noodling or bad Doors imitations, there's enough of H.P. Lovecraft's own particular approach to justify a listen by anyone into exploratory late-'60s rock. Certainly once or twice the band ends up sounding remarkably prescient -- the opening of "Wayfaring Stranger" calls to mind the blend of propulsion and trance Can would shortly make its own in Germany, with Tegza's tight beats leading the way. Plenty of other examples can be noted, with the transferred tape itself further suggesting the European group's approach -- check the midsection of "The Drifter," where only Michaels' keyboards steer away from the driving rhythm. Edwards and Michaels' lead vocals work great together live -- their training and earlier studio experience showing well -- and the whole band tackles the spirit of the times to a T. Two standout performances are the one-two punch of "The White Ship" and "At the Mountain of Madness," both of which also make for the perfect tribute to the original Lovecraft himself.

Hp Lovecraft - Hp Lovecraft II (1969)

Αν και οι σχέσεις μεταξύ των μελών της μπάντας δεν ήταν στο καλύτερο επίπεδο, δημιούργησαν το 1969 το δεύτερο εξίσου καταπληκτικό studio Lp, στο οποίο υπάρχει η αναφορά στο εξαίσιο At the Mountains of Madness του Howard Phillips Lovecraft.

Much more progressive than their first effort, the album also showed the band losing touch with some of their most obvious strengths, most notably their disciplined arrangements and incisive songwriting. The arrangements are more swirling and far denser on this follow-up. Unsurprisingly, the more concise, dual harmony numbers that bear the closest resemblance to the first album work best, especially "At the Mountains of Madness."
