The Conception - Babylon/The Game (1969)

Ένα από τα εν γένει μυστήρια των 60’ς καθώς δεν υπάρχει σχεδόν η παραμικρή πληροφορία για αυτούς. Σε μία μόνο πηγή είδα ότι ήταν από το Louisville του Κεντάκι, το έψαξα αρκετά και μέσα από ένα λαβύρινθο βρήκα ότι δύο από τα μέλη του γκρουπ ήταν οι Mike Seibold, Bill Tullis που αργότερα εμφανίστηκαν στο σχήμα των  Leslie's Motel μία southern/hard psychedelic blues rock μπάντα. Στο Louisville ο Bill Tullis φάνηκε αρκετά δραστήριος και μέσα από μπάντες όπως οι Oxfords (http://psychspaniolos.blogspot.gr/search/label/Oxfords) και διάφορες γνωριμίες, όπως δήλωσε ο ίδιος σχημάτισε τους  Conception έχοντας παρέα τον  Mike Seibold, αλλά άγνωστο ποιούς άλλους. Εκεί είδε ένα γκρουπάκι ονόματι Allman Joys δηλαδή τους μετέπειτα Allman Brothers Band, «σάλταρε» με την καλή έννοια από την μαγεία του γκρουπ, διέλυσε τους Conception και μέσα από διάφορα σχήματα και νέες γνωριμίες κατέληξε στους Leslie's Motel.

Το ότι σαν Conception αναφέρονται έστω και ελάχιστα στο νετ  έχει να κάνει με τον τίτλο του πρώτου τους τραγουδιού στο μοναδικό τους 45αρι, το Babylon που είναι μία διασκευή από τους Blue Cheer. Ουσιαστικά οι Conception ήταν μία heavy psych μπάντα.

Προσπάθησα επίσης να αντλήσω από τις λιγοστές πληροφορίες που υπάρχουν στο label. Καταρχήν σαν Perfection label δεν υπάρχει στους Αμερικάνους πουθενά τέτοια εταιρεία που να έχει βγάλει είτε κάτι άλλο είτε να υπάρχει έστω κάποια πληροφορία. Βρήκα άλλη μία εταιρεία με το ίδιο όνομα τότε αλλά δεν είχε καμία σχέση.

Επόμενη αναζήτηση μέσω του παραγωγού, κάποιου Stuart Paine, ο οποίος εμφανίζεται την εποχή εκείνη να έχει την Soul Blvd label και μάλλον και την Delcrest label στο Louisville του Κεντάκι. Λογικά λοιπόν και οι Conception  θα πρέπει να ήταν από αυτά τα μέρη. Εξάλλου στο Louisville του Κεντάκι τότε υπήρχε πραγματικός μουσικός οργασμός σε πολλά επίεπδα. Ο παραγωγός αυτός αναφέρεται και σε άλλα γκρουπάκια της εποχής όπως στους The Keyes, The Friendly Room, Company Front, The Gentrys.  Κάπου πήρε το μάτι μου ότι ίσως οι Conception είναι οι The Gentrys αλλά ακούγοντας τα κομμάτια τους δεν διαπίστωσα ομοιότητες. Ίσως λίγο στο Cinnamon Girl αλά δεν νομίζω.

Τελευταία πληροφορία ότι ο συνθέτης του flip side είναι κάποιος Charlie Day που κυκλοφόρησε και αυτός τότε ένα 45αρι στην CMC Records με τίτλο  «I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire/ It's Good To Know» το οποίο δεν έχω ακούσει.

Στο νετ υπάρχει από αυτούς η διασκευή των Blue Cheer αλλά όχι το The Game το οποίο είναι νομίζω  σπάνιο να το βρείτε και να το ακούσετε, για αυτό το ανέβασα. Είναι ενα έξοχο psych τζαζίστικο κομμάτι. Φωτο του γκρουπ ή κάτι παρόμοιο δεν υπάρχει ούτε για δείγμα, οπότε επέλεξα για το βίντεο μία πάρα πολύ παλιά απεικόνηση του
Louisville του 1846.

Conception were one of the first "heavy" blues bands in Louisville. Bill Tullis and Mike Seibold later are in the Leslie's Motel band. You'd be excused for thinking this 45 is by two different groups. The 'A' is a cover of Blue Cheer's brain-buster, suitably heavy with phasing; the 'B' is a mellow jazzy West Coast workout - a cure for Babylon presumably! (MW).

All 6 - Baby Hold On / You Call It Love (1967)

Το γκρουπάκι αυτό του οποίου τα μέλη ήταν από τα Mamaroneck, Larchmont, και New Rochelle της Νέας Υόρκης προφανώς και είναι άγνωστο. Και φυσικά το Garage Hangover δίνει ως συνήθως τις πληροφορίες αλλά τουλάχιστον εμείς εδώ οι πολύ μακρινοί δίνουμε στο νετ τα τραγουδάκια τους. Άρα κάτι κάνουμε και εμείς οι φτωχοί συγγενείς.

Όπως διαβάζουμε το όνομα μπορεί να ήταν All 6 αλλά η μπάντα αυτή είχε πέντε μέλη.  Παρατηρώντας το label για τα ονόματα βλέπουμε ως τον ένα συνθέτη με το όνομα Paul Leka (πέθανε το 2011 από καρκίνο των πνευμόνων ότι θα πάθω και γω έτσι όπως καπνίζω), που το όνομά του δεν μας λέει τίποτα, αλλά το  «Green Tambourine» που έγραψε για τους Lemon Pipers μας λέει πολλά. Είναι ο δημιουργός του «Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)» των Steam ενώ αξίζει να αναφέρουμε ότι ο κιθαρίστας αυτός  συνεργάστηκε με Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, and Smokey Robinson & the Miracles. Μιλάμε ότι το άτομο ήταν αστέρι της Motown.

Είχα ξετρυπώσει τα δύο τους μοναδικά τραγουδάκια πριν πολλά χρόνια και να που ήρθε η ώρα τους καθώς δεν τα έχω δει να κυκλοφορούν εκεί που θα έπρεπε. Και δικά σας πλέον αν σας αρέσουν.

VibraGun – Vibragun (2014)

Αξίζει νομίζω της προσοχής μας αυτή η μπάντα από το Σιάτλ. Ανέβασα δυο κομμάτια από το cd τους να τους ακούσετε και θα βρείτε και άλλα. Η δουλειά τους κυκλοφόρησε στις 4 Γενάρη και πριν λίγες μέρες «τράκαρα» πάνω τους. Είδος μουσικής κάτι από alternative rock, dream pop, indie rock, shoegaze. Μην τους θεωρήσετε μόνο ως μελωδικούς αρκεί να σκαλίσετε για το λίγο παλαιότερο Supernova Comedown  ή ακόμα και από αυτή την δουλειά τους το Send Me To Dream. Ξεχώρισα δύο κομμάτια που μου αρέσουν περισσότερο να ακούσετε και σεις.

Music is not something that is just consumed.
They are proving this with their own music. VibraGun is not only successful in mixing 90’s alternative music and the feel of today, they were also able to do so with the senses of UK and US.Their music can vibrate our brain, by delivering coexistence of beauty and madness particular to shoegaze expression, with wave-like guitar sound, beautiful chorus work and the beat. They are planning to create a new album and a 7” record. As for the album, recording has already started and it should be released during the early months of next year. Currently they are asking to fund Split 7” record with Dirty Sidewalks at Kickstarter. VibraGun will become one of the most talked about bands among both new and old shoegaze fans.

The Wig – Crackin’ Up / Bluescene (1967) and some more…

Κάποτε είχα ανεβάσει ένα τραγούδι των  The Lavender Hill Express το Silly Rhymes, όπου δύο από τα μέλη αυτού του γκρουπ (oι Wier  και  Yaran), προήλθαν από την διάλυση των…Wig. 

Οι Wig, το πραγματικά εξαιρετικό αυτό γκρουπ από το Όστιν του Τέξας (δεύτερο σε φήμη πίσω από τους 13^th Floor Elevators στο Τέξας) που έδρασε μεταξύ 1965-67 δυστυχώς κυκλοφόρησε μόνο δύο 45αρια ενώ ακυκλοφόρητες ηχογραφήσεις τους βγήκαν το 1983 με τίτλο «Live at the Jade Room».

Λιγοστές αλλά ουσιαστικές οι πληροφορίες για αυτούς στο νετ. Σαφώς και από το Gararage Hangover με τις μόνες φωτό τους, το οποίο δυστυχώς από καιρό όχι μόνο σταμάτησε να ανεβάζει αλλά κατέβασε και όλα τα τραγούδια. Πάντως οι πληροφορίες και από την κλασική έκδοση που βάζω κάτω από κάθε παλιό γκρουπ είναι επίσης χρήσιμες. Μου άρεσε που διάβασα από ένα μέλος των Leo and the Prophets, τον Dan Hickamn το παρακάτω απόσπασμα… «The Wig had this wonderful guitar player who, in my opinion, was easily the best guitarist of that whole time, Johnny Richardson. He was so good, it was scary. But he was the kind of person that did not want fame. He just walked away from it».

Αποφάσισα να ανεβάσω στο νετ και στο youtube να υπάρχουν από αυτούς κυρίως τα πραγματικά εξαιρετικά demo τους. Η πρώτη πλευρά στο 45αρι περι ου ο λόγος υπάρχει εύκολα, όχι όμως η demo εκτέλεση του «Crackin' Up» που επέλεξα να ανεβάσω αλλά ούτε και το flip side του δίσκου, το «Bluescene». Στο αρχείο έβαλα και μία εκτέλεση του Louie Louie που δεν είδα να υπάρχει επίσης πουθενά αλλά και το εξαιρετικό  «Forever And A Day» Δεν βρήκα δυστυχώς πουθενά το «To Have Never Loved At All» . Αν το έχει κανείς ας το μοιραστεί μαζί μας αν θέλει.

The Wig were one of Austin's longest lasting sixties rock groups. Benny Rowe had earlier played in The Wigs but when they broke up after a European tour he retained the name omitting the 's' and put together line-up (A) above. They quickly became a popular live attraction in Central Texas performing regularly at the Jade Room in Austin. Promotional copies of the Empire release came on yellow vinyl. The 'A' side, Crackin' Up, which included some competent guitar playing but lacked any commercial potential was a Rusty Wier composition. The flip was an instrumental. When the follow-up made little impact the writing was on the wall for the band. They finally broke up in 1968 and Wier and Yaryan went on to Lavender Hill Express, whilst Johnny Richardson teamed up with Gary P. Nunn, Rick Cobb and Chuck Greenwood in The Georgetown Medical Band. Wier later enjoyed a successful solo career. 

The retrospective album features The Wig covering five classic songs of the era - Everybody Needs Somebody, Gimme Some Lovin', Louie Louie, Gloria and You Really Got Me - and playing their second 45 live at the Jade Room. It also includes both sides of their first intended but unreleased 45 - Little By Little and Forever And A Day, which later evolved into Crackin' Up. There's also a practice recording of Crackin' Up prior to the recording of the first 45. The remaining two tracks are by The Georgetown Medical Band. Still it's probably true to say that this album is likely to remain largely the interest of rock archivists.

Mike Cooper - Trout Steel (1971)

Απουσίασα για μέρες λόγω διαφόρων ατυχιών (μεταξύ άλλων το σαραβαλάκι που είχα εξέπνευσε οπότε τώρα οδικώς, ενώ στο μεταξύ κλέψανε από μέσα τα χαρτιά του,  η οθόνη που πισι κάηκε κ.λ.π.) αλλά ελπίζουμε σε καλύτερες μέρες. Πρέπει. Οπότε σήμερα Κυριακή ανεβάζω ακόμα κάτι…παλιό, άγνωστο ή ίσως ξεχασμένο.

Ένας πολυτάλαντος καλλιτέχνης , τραγουδοποιός και πλέον εδώ και πολλά χρόνια πειραματιστής με την μουσική. Δηλαδή ο Mike Cooper που γεννήθηκε στις 24 Αυγούστου το 1942 στο Reading του Berkshire και ηχογραφεί ακόμα και σήμερα (ατέλειωτες κυκλοφορίες),  με τις πληροφορίες για τον βίο του και κυρίως για την μουσική του διαδρομή να είναι πάμπολλες. Για παράδειγμα το λινκ που ακολουθεί είναι ίσως το καλύτερο για όποιον ενδιαφέρεται http://www.cooparia.com/welcome/biography. Γενικά από ότι παρατήρησα ο Mike Cooper δεν κυκλοφορεί στα παρομοίου περιεχομένου blog που βολτάρουμε και μάλλον κακώς.

Ξεκίνησε δισκογραφικά από τα μπλουζ το 1968 σε μία κυκλοφορία μαζί με τον Ιan Anderson, το 1969 μόνος πλέον με το Oh Really!, για να περάσει στην συνέχεια σε φολκ κυκλοφορώντας τα Do I Know You και Trout Steel το 1970 και 1971 αντίστοιχα, έκανε μετά μία μικρή επιστροφή στο μπλουζ με φολκ το 1972 με το Places I Know και μετά έφυγε για τους πειραματικούς του σχεδιασμούς και αναζητήσεις (συνεχίζονται ακόμα και σήμερα) που κάποτε τον έφεραν και στην Ελλάδα.

Για όποιον ενδιαφέρεται υπάρχουν σε αρχείο οι πρώτες του αυτές δημιουργίες, από τις οποίες διάλεξα το Trout Steel το οποίο ανήκει στο περιεχόμενο αυτού του blog. Εκείνο που μουσικά ίσως το χαρακτηρίζουν είναι οι πειραματισμοί του στην μουσική , με πρώτη απόπειρα σε αυτό το δίσκο στο I’ve Got Mine.

Ελπίζω πάντως να μην έχω δισκογραφικά μπλεξίματα δικαιωμάτων με τον Mike Cooper λόγω της ανάρτησης. Ανέβασα για να πάρετε μία γεύση το παρακάτω κομμάτι του που βρίσκω εξαιρετικό.

A contemporary folk/blues artist who was based in Reading, Berkshire. He was at the forefront of the folk/blues movement in the UK in the sixties and early seventies and ran a popular folk/blues club in Reading. He helped found the Matchbox label, for whom he recorded his debut album, along with Ian A. Anderson. He also played guitar on some of Anderson's recordings, as well as on some by John Dummer and Heron. Cooper used an impressive array of artists on his recordings. His maxi singles for Dawn are recommended. Your Lovely Ways features excellent instrumentation with Cooper's wavering vocals.

Perth County Conspiracy - The Perth County Conspiracy Does Not Exist (1970)

Κυριακή πρωί με τον καιρό εδώ που βρίσκομαι να μην μου δημιουργεί και την καλύτερη διάθεση. Ίσως γιατί βίωσα μία ακόμα πολύ δύσκολη βδομάδα…(σαν τις πολλές άλλες που πέρασαν αλλά και που σίγουρα θα έρθουν) αλλά και ίσως γιατί μεγάλωσα ακόμα ένα χρόνο πριν λίγες μέρες.

Η διάθεση για σήμερα προδιαθέτει ήρεμα ακούσματα. Έχω γράψει στο παρελθόν ότι είμαι αν όχι από τους φανατικούς αλλά από τους εραστές των Καναδών καλλιτεχνών που καταπιάστηκαν με την ψυχεδέλεια και την φολκ. Σχεδόν ότι έχω ακούσει από εκείνη την μεριά του πλανήτη είναι πανέμορφο. Όπως αυτό το συγκρότημα για παράδειγμα.

Πληροφορίες ευτυχώς υπάρχουν ατέλειωτες για αυτούς συνεπώς όποιος ενδιαφερθεί θα βρει τα πάντα. Ίσως αξίζει να διαβάσετε λίγο για τον Σέντρικ Σμιθ (γεννήθηκε στο Μπέρμιγχαμ), ο οποίος εξελίχθηκε και σε ένα εξαιρετικό ηθοποιό. Επέλεξα να ανεβάσω αυτό το Lp διότι είχα ότι έχει χαθεί από τα blog, αν και δεν ήταν ποτέ δημοφιλές (κάκιστα). 

Σκαλίζοντας βρήκα και το περιεχόμενο του εξώφυλλου που κυκλοφόρησε μόνο στον Καναδά τότε, στο οποίο με λίγη καλή προσπάθεια θα διαβάσετε τους στίχους των κομματιών και άλλες πληροφορίες.  Έβαλα και στο youtube το κομμάτι που μου αρέσει περισσότερο.

Perth County Conspiracy – Easy Rider

Keelan and Smith put together this trio in Stratford, Ontario, in 1969. They played satirical folk music, drawing on the words of Dylan Thomas, William Shakespeare and others and blending them with lyrics about love and peace.

After recording two albums on the independent Rumour label they were signed to Columbia. Their first of two hits was with an edited version of You've Got To Know, a cut from their first Columbia album. 

Their Does Not Exist album came in a beautiful gatefold sleeve and is full of hippie folk/psych with appealing melodies and harmonies, which reach their zenith on the exquisite final cut, Crucifixation Cartoon. There's not a bad track on this album and lots of other pretty good ones (Midnight Hour, Easy Rider (a song about the film), You Have The Power and the gentle Lady Of The County). All are originals and some are preceded by narratives. The opening cut features an extract from one of Dylan Thomas' poems, Truth And Fantasy begins with a narration and later on side two an excerpt from William Shakespeare's As You Like It is put to music. There are similarities to the Incredible String Band and Everyone Involved here. Recommended if you enjoy stoned hippie folk/psych.

The Alive album is a double set, housed in a beautiful cover, featuring a competent cover of Bob Dylan's You Ain't Going Nowhere and a number of originals. Like most double albums it is patchy, but there are some gentle acoustic numbers like Sailboat and Broken Wing and much of the material is quite folkish, but tracks like Hezakaiah are marred by annoying spoken utterances. It was recorded in a church.

They continued to record after the time span of this book. There was a further live album, Break Out In Berlin in 1976 and Cedric Smith recorded an album with Terry Jones in 1977, Ten Lost Years - And Them Some, but when the group broke up in the late seventies he developed an acting career.

Matt Kanelos and The Smooth Maria

Στιγμή ίσως για κάτι διαφορετικό. Η προσοχή μου από καιρό έπεσε σε αυτόν τον Ελληνο – Αμερικάνο, ονόματι Ματ Κανέλος. Η μουσική του με άγγιξε εκεί που πρέπει για να τον εκτιμήσω κυρίως ως τραγουδοποιό  αλλά και ερμηνευτή. Ειλικρινά δεν βρίσκω κάτι άλλο να γράψω για αυτόν τον άνθρωπο που προσωπικά, αν και δεν τον ξέρω,  τον ευχαριστώ πάρα πολύ για τα συναισθήματα που μου δημιούργησε.

Matt Kanelos

The Greek-American, Matt Kanelos started playing piano when he was seven, studied jazz in high school, went to music conservatory for classical piano, moved to New York to play jazz piano, started singing and writing songs a few years later, picked up the guitar, developed a sense for recording and music production, started gathering found sound and messing around with noise, and then started playing the drums.

He developed his songwriting concept while studying creative writing at the City College of New York. Matt's lyrical stylings and minimalist musical aesthetic bring to mind influences such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Will Oldham, Cat Power, Miles Davis, and Keith Jarrett. Performing regularly in New York, as well as Chicago, Boston, and Seattle, he has collaborated with Noam Weinstein, Rose Polenzani, Jenifer Jackson, Jodi Shaw, Serena Jost, Sam Kenny, Roland Satterwhite, and Jason Liebman as well as members of Califone and Elysian Fields.

In 2007, Matt formed the band The Smooth Maria with Joe Adamik, Ben Gallina, Conor Meehan, and Kyle Sanna. The Smooth Maria have attracted a dedicated audience in New York City with their unique balance of refined musicianship and vivid poetry.

They perform frequently at acclaimed New York music venues like the Living Room, the Rockwood Music Hall, and Barbès. Τheir first full-length CD, “Silent Show,” release 20 September 2010. On October   2010 they released the  EP “Paper Thin”.  The second full-length CD “Love Hello,” released just few days ago.
