Tear Gas - Piggy Go Getter (1970)

Συνεχίζω σε Βρετανικούς ρυθμούς με την πρώτη δουλειά των Tear Gas που κινήθηκαν στο χώρο του rock με κάποια prog αλλά και ψυχεδελικά στοιχεία. Θα έλεγα ότι η πρώτη πλευρά μας «αγγίζει» μουσικά στα αυστηρά γούστα μας. Νομίζω πως ο επόμενος δίσκος τους (ο ομώνυμος) είναι λίγο καλύτερος. Τα τέσσερα πρώτα κομμάτια είναι αξιόλογα. Σίγουρο πάντως είναι ότι μπορούμε να ζήσουμε και χωρίς τους Tear Gas εκτός και μας ενδιαφέρει η rock πλευρά τους.

Originally known as Mustard. Their first vocalist Andy Mulvey had previously been with The Poets. However, he was soon replaced by David Batchelor and around the same time Gilson Lavis (their original drummer, who later played with Squeeze) was replaced by Richard Monro from Ritchie Blackmore's Mandrake Root. This line-up recorded Piggy Go Getter, which made little impact. In 1970 Hugh McKenna took over Batchelor's vocal role and Ted McKenna (ex-Dream Police) relieved Monro on drums. They recorded a second album and tried to establish themselves on the underground scene but were going nowhere with their brand of tired boogie heavy rock, until they teamed up with Alex Harvey in August 1972 to become The Sensational Alex Harvey Band.

Velvett Fogg - Velvett Fogg (1969)

Από την SEE FOR MILES RECORDS κυκλοφόρησε πριν χρόνια το cd από την μοναδική δουλειά των Βρετανών. Οι Velvett Fogg σχηματίστηκαν στο Μπέρμινχαμ το 1968 από τα μέλη μίας άλλης μπάντας (Gravy Train) με άλλη σύνθεση. Ξεκίνησαν την μουσική τους διαδρομή μάλλον ασυνήθιστα αφού μετακόμισαν στην Γερμανία για να παίζουν σε στρατιωτικές βάσεις και clubs.

Η επιστροφή τους όμως στο νησί έφερε καθοριστικές αλλαγές σε όλα τα επίπεδα. Για παράδειγμα την θέση του κιθαρίστα όπου για ένα φεγγάρι πήρε ο Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) πήρε μετά ο Ian Leighton, ο οποίος αργότερα έδωσε την θέση του στον Paul Eastment (ξάδερφο του Tony Iommi).

Για το ενδιαφέρον που υπάρχει όσον αφορά το εξώφυλλο αφού στην μπάντα δεν συμμετείχαν γυναίκες. Βρήκα το παρακάτω σχόλιο… displayed the pre-Paul Eastment line-up of the band wearing garish make-up/body-paint and costume but also included two well-endowed young women wearing nothing but strategically applied body paint! This politically-incorrect package was accompanied by a typically obscure sleevenote by the influential U.K. disc jockey John Peel who commented "There is a lot of good music on this record. Remember Velvett Fogg - you will hear the name again."

Οι απογοητευτικές πωλήσεις του Lp έπαψαν το ενδιαφέρον της εταιρείας Pye με συνέπεια την διάλυση του γκρουπ το 1969. Τα μέλη του οποίου τράβηξαν διαφορετικούς δρόμους όπως για παράδειγμα ο Paul Eastment που έφτιαξε μία μπάντα με το όνομα Holy Ghost (αργότερα σκέτο Ghost) που έβγαλαν ένα δίσκο στη Gemini (When You're Dead).

Complete with sleeve notes from John Peel came Velvett Fogg with a blend of their own compositions, like Yellow Cave Woman, The Delicate Wizard Of Gobsolob and Once Among The Trees, the story of a chase with strong sexual overtones. Plastic Man, a comment on politicians, and Owed To The Dip, an organ-dominated instrumental; and their own interpretative cover versions of The Bee Gee's New York Mining Disaster 1941 and Tim Rose's Come Away Melinda. Worth a listen, but don't pay a lot for it.
Paul Eastment was later in Ghost. Organist Frank Wilson was a founding member of Warhorse.
The See For Miles reissue includes the band's interesting version of Telstar. Two cuts from their album have also been compiled. The mildly psychedelic Within The Night can also be found on Rubble, Vol. 7 - Pictures In The Sky (LP) and Lady Caroline, an anguished story-song, got further exposure on Rubble, Vol. 10 - Professor Jordan's Magic Sound Show (LP). Come Away Melinda also appeared on Progressive Music (LP).

The Helpful Soul - First Album (1969) (by request)

Κατόπιν παράκλησης ενός φίλου του Blog για σήμερα έχουμε τους Ιάπωνες The Helpful Soul στον πρώτο δίσκο τους. Μουσικά κινούνται στο Heavy Psych με πολύ δόση blues και με Αγγλικό στίχο. Από τα εννέα κομμάτια τα έξι είναι διασκευές, με τους Helpful Soul να δείχνουν μία ιδιαίτερη προτίμηση στον Jimi Hendrix (Fire, You Got The Floatin’, Little Wing), στο μέγα μπλουζίστα Robert Johnson (Crossroads), στον Willie Dixon (Spoonful με 15λεπτη διάρκεια) αλλά και στους Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller (Kansas City). Μετά από αυτές τις διασκευές έμεινε χώρος και για τρεις δικές τους συνθέσεις. Η πιο ψυχεδελική στιγμή τους είναι μάλλον στο κομμάτι Aladin's Theme.

Ted Nugent and The Amboy Dukes - Survival of the Fittest Live (1971)

Το άλμπουμ αυτό ηχογραφήθηκε της 31 Ιουλίου και 1 Αυγούστου του 1970 στο Eastowne Theatre στο Detroit και είναι ουσιαστικά το 2ο Lp σαν Ted Nugent and The Amboy Dukes στην Polydor πλέον. Ας ξεχάσουμε τους ψυχεδελικούς Amboy Dukes που ξέραμε αφού εδώ είναι με καθαρά rock προσανατολισμούς. Εκτιμώ ότι την «ροκιά» την έχουμε όλοι μέσα μας, συνεπώς…"Slidin' On".

Recorded live at The Eastowne Theater in Detroit, MI, July 31 and August 1, 1970. This is prime slab of Nugent. It is quite clear what was happening with the Amboy Dukes at this point. If the new name "Ted Nugent AND the Amboy Dukes" doesn't give you a clue, the outrageous guitar antics on the live platter will. Steve Farmer is long gone from here, and only Andy Solomon and Ted Nugent remain from the "original" band who had a big hit with "Journey to the Center of the Mind" a couple of years before this concert was recorded. It was obviously the Ted Nugent show gearing up to become one of the biggest heavy metal concert draws of the '70s and early '80s. The 21-minute-and-20-second epic "Prodigal Man," written by Nugent and sung by keyboardist Andy Solomon features a solo by each of the musicians in the band, with 'ol Uncle Ted finishing things up with some of the aforementioned outrageous guitar antics. Papa's Will" is a stinkin' heavy song and riff.

Astral Navigations - Astral Navigations (1971)

Και πάλι από την Βρετανία η σημερινή επιλογή που αφορά τους Astral Navigations (προφανώς και δεν έχουν καμία απολύτως σχέση με ένα γκρουπ από το Νορθάμπτον του καιρού μας) και το μοναδικό Lp τους. Το «μοναδικό» cd τους στην περίπτωσή μας, από την «συλλεκτική» επανέκδοση της Background HBG 122/1 CD που αναφέρει και το κείμενο από το The Tapesrtry of Delights, περιέχει στο ένθετο τους στίχους.

Όπως θα παρατηρείται στην σύνθεση του γκρουπ μιλάμε για δύο διαφορετικές ομάδες ατόμων που μετά από 400 ώρες δουλειάς παρουσίασαν (μία πλευρά η κάθε ομάδα) την ενδιαφέρουσα δουλειά τους. Η πρώτη πλευρά ηχογραφήθηκε το 70 και η 2η το 71. Μέσα στα μέλη εμφανίζεται ο Brian Wilson από τους Beach Boys ο οποίος παίζει μπάσο μόνο στο κομμάτι Yesterday.

Πρόκειται σαφώς για ένα πολύ αξιόλογο δίσκο που συνδυάζει την ψυχεδέλια με την folk (στην «πρώτη» πλευρά). Ξεχωρίζει το Today (North Country Cinderella), το Windows of Limited Time-The Astral Navigato και το Path of Stone από την «ήρεμη» φύση τους.

NB: (1) reissued on Magic Mixture (MM 2) and on Holyground in 1989 (R1) and on CD (Background HBG 122/1 CD) 1992. The CD reissue is limited to 1,000 copies and includes two bonus tracks, Rock Me Babe, and a spacey version of Come On Home.

These two bands share a side each of this album which is a nice mixture of folk and psychedelia with lots of fuzz guitar. A very difficult record to find now, the original came with a poster cover and booklet and the reissue came with a booklet and was lavishly repackaged. The five Lightyears Away tracks are mostly quite folky and melodic with pleasant male vocals and the occasional female voice too. The exception is Yesterday which begins with a recording of a space launch which leads into lots of fuzz guitar work.

Thundermother were a studio creation and their contribution was recorded over a weekend (mostly on acid). They were an amalgam of various Preston artists:- David John (David John and The Mood), Fred Kelly (Rare Bird), Dave Millen (The Puppets) and Frank Newbould (Little Free Rock). To my ears the three Thundermother tracks are better. Today, Tomorrow, Someday and Country Lines are both notable for some discordant instrumental work whilst on the first cut the vocals are rather folky. The magnum opus, though, is the extended and highly experimental finale Boogie Music, which is imaginative with lots of good fuzzy guitar work - one of Holyground's finest moments.
Thundermother have also been the focus of another CD retrospective No Red Rowan (Kissing Spell KSG 003) 1995, which features material recorded between '70-'71. You can also Thundermother's Boogie Music and Rock Me Babe on Loose Routes.

Mark Fry - Dreaming with Alice (1972)

Το πρώτο που με τράβηξε στο δίσκο ήταν η απόλυτη σχεδόν ομοιότητα στο εξώφυλλο με το δίσκο του Donovan που προηγήθηκε για αυτό επέλεξα και να τον βάλω. Από κει και μετά πρόκειται για ένα Άγγλο καλλιτέχνη της folk σκηνής.

Το περίεργο της υπόθεσης είναι ότι στην Αγγλία ήταν άγνωστος αφού ο δίσκος του κυκλοφόρησε στην Ιταλία (στην επιφάνεια ήρθε από ένα cd της Akarma) ενώ είχε ηχογραφηθεί σε Ρώμη από τον 19χρονο τότε Mike. Περισσότερες πληροφορίες μπορείτε να βρείτε εδώ στο σαιτ του τροβαδούρου. Προσωπικά μου αρέσει το Mandolin Man μέσα από ένα καθόλα πολύ ενδιαφέρον άλμπουμ.

Donovan – Barabajagal (1969)

Ενόψει το 9ο Lp του Donovan το οποίο έφτασε στο Νο 23 στην Αμερική όταν βγήκε. Σύμφωνα με όσα έχω ανεβάσει μέχρι τώρα από Donovan αυτή η δουλειά του δεν διαφέρει αισθητά από τις προηγούμενες. Τολμώ πάντως να πω πως δεν υπάρχει η τρανταχτή επιτυχία. Το κομμάτι Trudi ίσως κάνει κάπως την διαφορά.

Η επανέκδοση της ΕΜΙ όπως βλέπεται γέμισε το δίσκο με αρκετά bonus κομμάτια (13) τα οποία είχαν ηχογραφηθεί το 1969 με το Jeff Beck Group αλλά είχαν μείνει ανέκδοτα.
