τους «Fred And Anna Vagle».
With
its simple arrangements and minimal instrumentation, this split album with
talented artists on both sides is sure to appeal to folk music fans. First up
is singer-songwriter Mike Monroe, who serves up five tunes, four of them
originals. His talent as an acoustic guitarist is clear, and on his cover of
Paul Stookey’s “John Henry Bosworth,” he plays banjo as well. Monroe’s songwriting ability especially
shines on the dreamy “Rus.” He’s joined by Phil Kitchen on 12-string guitar and
background vocals, and Dave Riley on bass.
Mike Monroe – Rus (1973)
Side
two features Fred and Anne Vagle. Ann sings and adds some nice touches on
recorder, piano, and percussion, while Fred plays the guitar and adds
occasional vocals. They also get help from Phil Kitchen and Dave Riley. Anne’s
beautiful, clear voice is showcased on tracks like “Simple Gifts” and the minor
key ballad “The Willow,” one of two songs penned by the Vagles. A Paul Stookey
tune makes an appearance here too; this time it’s a version of his “Sebastian.”
– David Overstreet.
