The Other Half - Mr. Pharmacist

Προσωπικά μου αρέσει εξίσου το I Know αλλά και το ψυχεδελικότερο Wonderful Day.

ALBUM:
1(A) THE OTHER HALF (Acta 38004) 1968

NB: (1) also released in Germany with a totally different sleeve (Die Volks Platte ) 1968. (1) counterfeited on CD and on vinyl as Mr. Pharmacist (Eva 12003) 198?. Housed in a different sleeve, the Eva album contains additional 45 cuts.

45s:
1 Wonderful Day/Flight Of The Dragon Lady (Acta 801) 1967
2 No Doubt About It/I Need You (Acta 806) 1967
3 Oz Lee Eaves Drops/Morning Fire (Acta 825) 1968
4 Mr Pharmacist/I've Come So Far (GNP Crescendo 378) 1968
NB: There's also a rare French EP with picture sleeve: Mr Pharmacist/I've Come So Far/It's Too Hard/I Know (Vogue INT 18112) 1968.

The above album was a competent effort, composed of original numbers aside from an interesting version of Arthur Lee's Feathered Fish. Holden's fine psychedelic guitar work stands out throughout and is at its best on Morning Fire plus the finale What Can I Do For You?. Another number, Oz Lee Eaves Drops had an interesting beat, whilst the band's best known track, the non-LP Mr. Pharmacist, is a classic psych-punker and well worth checking out.

This group contained Randy Holden who, on The Other Half's demise, replaced Leigh Stephens in the better known Blue Cheer. Craig Tarwater (gtr) and Mike Pon (bs), both ex-Sons Of Adam, were also members of the band, but did not feature on the album.

Carolyn White, who used to live with the band in Mill Valley, California, recalls that they may have recorded a second album entitled The Other Half And How To Get It - Anyone have further info? Carolyn also tells us "Things came to an official end in L.A. when Jeff and Larry and Ron decided to move to Northern California, however I think Randy was the first to want to break up. It happened right after they recorded the theme to 'Mod Squad', a sixties cop show".

Compilation appearances include: Mr. Pharmacist on Mayhem & Psychosis, Vol. 2 (LP), Mindrocker, Vol. 1 (LP), Nuggets Box (4-CD), Nuggets, Vol. 12 (LP), Sound Of The Sixties (Dble LP) and Sixties Archive Vol. 1 (CD); Mr. Pharmacist and I've Come So Far on Psychotic Reaction Plus Ten (CD); Feathered Fish on Sixties Rebellion, Vol. 8 (LP & CD).

The Tea Company - Come And Have Some Tea With The Tea Company (1968)

Για αυτό λοιπόν τους λέω Make love, not war με όποιον τρόπο μπορούν να το καταλάβουν.

ALBUM:
1(A) COME AND HAVE SOME TEA WITH THE TEA COMPANY (Smash 67105) 1968
NB: (1) has been counterfeited on LP and CD. There is also a superior CD edition, released by band member Mike Lassandro - see main text for details.

45:
1 Come And Have Some Tea With Me/Flowers (Smash 2176) 1968

Tea was another word for marijuana, so with a name like The Tea Company, it is clear what to expect from their sole album. It is an interesting effort, with the title track and ten-minute cut, Flowers outstanding. The latter sounds Beatles-influenced psychedelia, with high-pitched guitar notes superimposed upon a typical psychedelic backing. It sounds rather like an extended version of the ending to Strawberry Fields Forever.

Aside from a slowed-down version of The Supremes' hit You Keep Me Hanging On, all the compositions are originals and some are full of the usual hippie cliches and social commentary, for example, Love Could Make The World Go Round and Make Love Not War. Their sole 45 contained shorter versions of two cuts from their album, with Flowers being a drastically edited and remixed version.
The group, who were originally called The Lip-Tin Tea Company, came from Queens, N.Y. and evolved out of The Naturals. They played mostly in New York City, Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Al Vertucci recalls:- "The Tea Company and all The Naturals stuff was done at Ultra-Sonic by Bill Stahl". Ultra-Sonic was "in Hempstead, L.I., and the owner/engineer was Bill Stahl who did all of the 'Fudge and Shangri-Las stuff there. One of the great engineers ever!! He did with four tracks what people can't do today with 48. The Tea Company LP (which was recorded on 8 tracks) was then re-mixed and ruined at A&R Recording, 7th Avenue in NYC by Mercury's Dick Corby."

Tracks
1. Come and have some tea
2. Flowers
3. Love could make the world go round
4. You keep me hangin' on
5. Don't make waves
6. As i have seen you on the wall
7. Make love, not war

Eternity's Children - Eternity's Children

8 Laughing Girl/Little Boy (Tower 499) 1969
9 Alone Again / From You Unto Us (Liberty 56162) 1970
NB: (5) flipside was by Charles Ross III. (6) credited to Charles Ross E. III, although the 'B' side is just a different mix of an Eternity's Children album cut. (8) credited to Charles Ross III.

Originally The Phantoms (minus Lawley) they'd formed in Cleveland, Mississippi. After relocating to Biloxi, they recruited Linda Lawley and changed their name to Eternity's Children. With aspirations to become an L.A. pop-psych band, they honed their skills on the New Orleans circuit (playing as Charlie Rich's backing band?), before venturing to L.A. to record. Their main claim to fame was Mrs. Bluebird, a minor hit, which was produced by Millennium's Curt Boettcher and Keith Olsen. By the time their first album was released however, Bounds, Walker and Blackman had left, with the latter replaced by Texan McClain (ex-Neurotic Sheep).

Overall their eponymous debut album is a top album for Boettcher fans, and features songs by Boettcher plus other Millennium members - including Flowers, a Michael Fennelly composition dropped from Millennium's Begin album. Curiously, the "cover" of Sagittarius' You know I've Found A Way is the exact same track as the demo logged at the publishers, and may not even feature Eternity's Children at all!

Their second album was produced by Gary Paxton in Bakersfield, with compositions by Clarence White, Gene Parsons, Ben Benay and Gary & Jan Paxton. Sounding like a tougher Fifth Dimension, with a European tinge, akin perhaps to Glitterhouse's performance on the "Barbarella" soundtrack. A couple of the tracks, Blue Horizon and Sidewalks Of The Ghetto were cut with Spooner Oldham and Chips Moman - presumably in Memphis.

In 1969, the 45 releases get a little confusing, with consecutive Tower catalogue numbers mixing tracks credited to Charles Ross III, with Eternity's Children cuts. This kind of begs the question, whether this parallel release was a marketing ploy, to push Charles Ross III on the back of the more familiar group name. In addition, their final 45 includes an unreleased Curt Boettcher tune on the 'B' side which may even date back to their first album sessions.
Blackman went on to form Starbuck and later Korona.

The band also recorded a further album which wasn't released at the time. This has recently been discovered by Gear Fab and is due to be reissued together with other bonus material from '65 - '67, sometime in the near future. Alternatively, there is a Revola CD which comprises 25 tracks, covering both LPs and assorted 45s from 1967-1970. This comes with a detailed history by Dawn Eden.
Compilation appearances have included: Flowers and You Know I'll Find A Way on Bring Flowers To U.S. (LP).

Neighb'rhood Childr'n - Neighb'rhood Childr'n (1968)

3(B) NEIGHB'RHOOD CHILDR'N (Acta A-38005) 1968
4(-) LONG YEARS IN SPACE (dbl) (Sundazed 5023) 1997
NB: (1) is a 12" metal acetate album. Some tracks appear on the Acta album, most don't. (2) is a one-sided 12" metal album acetate of Acta album tracks with different mixes. Chocolate Angel has a longer intro. (3) pirated in 1989 and also on CD. (4) is an essential retrospective collection, also issued on CD (SC 11041).

EP:
1 THE NEIGHB'RHOOD CHILDR'N (Vegas Productions 863) 1967
NB: (1) issued with press kit by the group's booking agency. This promo-only 7" EP was not issued in a sleeve. It contained non-album cuts/versions of Up, Down, Turned Around World, Maggie's Farm, That's What's Happening and Please, Please Leave Me Alone.

45s:

1 Little Black Egg/Louie Louie (Golden State Recorders) 1967
2 Maintain/Just No Way (as 'The Neighborhood') (Acta 813) 1967
3 Please Leave Me Alone/Happy Child (Acta 823) 1968
4 Behold The Lilies/I Want Action (Acta 828) 1968
5 Woman Think/On Our Way (Dot 17238) 1969
NB: (1) is a One-sided 8" metal acetate. Only (3) is from the Acta album.

One of the many forgotten bands gigging in the 'Frisco area, Neighb'rhood Childr'n's sole album on Acta is a psychedelic 'gem'. But, alas, after its release they simply vanished from the scene. Back in '68 with comparatively crude instrumentation available they created some very spacey sounds on tracks like Long Years In Space, while Chocolate Angel is something of a psychedelic jam. Feeling Zero appears to have been specially written to bring you down after another trip, while tracks like Happy Child and Patterns feature Dyan Hoffmann's crystal clear vocals. lndeed on Long Years In Space she complements the other vocalists to give the band a Jefferson Airplane-type sound. They even perform a re-creation of Over The Rainbow from Wizard of Oz.

Neighb'rhood Childr'n also recorded a couple of acetate albums in addition to the album on Acta. Much of this material has been compiled on the excellent Long Years In Space retrospective on Sundazed, and this together with the 'Acta' album is strongly recommended to connoisseurs of psychedelia.
The band evolved out of Oregon's Navarros, when their original drummer John Morrison was drafted. After about a year Campbell, Gleim and Ryan quit too and Bolz and Hoffman were then joined by central California musicians W.A. Farrens on drums and Ron Raschdorf on lead guitar.
Collectors should note that a DJ 45, with Dancing In The Street on both sides (N.A.M.l. 2014) 1974, is actually by a different Neighborhood Children, and sounds similar to early Jackson brothers.
Compilation appearances include: Changes Brought To Me on Turds On A Bum Ride Vol. 1 & 2 (Dble CD) and Turds On A Bum Ride, Vol. 2 (Dble LP).

The Maze - Armageddon (1968)

ALBUM:
1(A) ARMAGEDDON (MTA MTS 5012) 1969
NB: (1) counterfeited on vinyl in 1989 and reissued legitimately on CD (Sundazed SC 6060) 1995 with six previously unreleased tracks - a combination of outtakes from the album and earlier folk-rock offerings from 1967.

From Fairfield, California, this band were previously known as Stone Henge, who in turn had evolved out of The Donnybrookes. Their album was produced by Larry Goldberg and Leo (De Gar) Kulka who operated out of Golden State Recorders in San Francisco. The album starts out with the melodramatic Armageddon which comprises most of Side One, the rest is taken up with the more melodic and laid back I'm So Sad.

The second side begins with the rather lightweight goodtime Happiness, but Whispering Shadows opens with some great discordant guitar work which gives away to some good group harmonies and Kissy Face also features some great vocals, Dejected Soul, with its sleepy vocals and fine fuzz guitar work, is among the album's finer moments. The final track, As For Now, seems to return to the more melodic, laid back style of I'm So Sad.

An album well worth tracking down. The Sundazed CD bonus cuts include two unreleased efforts from 1967 as by Stone Henge.
