Kostas Lazarides – Something We Call Love (1966)

Και τώρα κάτι μάλλον σπάνιο και άγνωστο σε εμάς του Έλληνες. Εκτιμώ ότι οι περισσότεροι από μας, μέσα από το γενικότερο ψαχούλευμα που κάνουν,  έχουν την τάση να ψάχνουν για να ξετρυπώσουν και τυχών Έλληνες του εξωτερικού, που εκείνη την εποχή ηχογράφησαν τραγούδια ανάλογου περιεχομένου με αυτά που ακούμε ή ανεβάζουμε.

Η «αρχαιολογική σκαπάνη» ανακάλυψε λοιπόν έναν Έλληνα, ονόματι Κώστας Λαζαρίδης ή κατά το Αμερικάνικο Kostas Lazarides, to label του οποίου είχαν πάρει το μάτι μου στο garazehangover. Με έκπληξη είδα ότι ο Kostas και η οικογένειά του στην Αμερική έγιναν γνωστοί και ιδίως ο Kostas, όπου τα επόμενα χρόνια έγινε ένας καταξιωμένος συνθέτης τραγουδιών στην Country, μερικά από τα οποία μάλιστα έφτασαν είτε  στο Νο1 είτε μπήκαν στο top 10 του αντίστοιχου chart.

Όποιος ενδιαφερθεί για τον Kostas  θα βρει ακόμα και λεπτομέρειες από την οικογενειακή του ζωή, η οποία είχε μερικές οικογενειακές δυσάρεστες στιγμές που δεν έχει νόημα να αναφερθούν εδώ.

Όσον αφορά το 45αρι του από το οποίο βρήκα μόνο το ένα κομμάτι να σας γράψω δύο λόγια. Το 1947 η μητέρα του Καλλιόπη και ο πατέρας του Σάβας  παντρεύτηκαν και τον Απρίλιο του 1947 γέννησαν τον Kostas. Η οικογένεια του Kostas έφυγε από Θεσσαλονίκη με προορισμό την Μοντάνα το 1954.  Μεγαλώνοντας λίγο ο Kostas προσπαθούσε για το μεροκάματο είτε ως paperboy  είτε ως γυαλιστής παπουτσιών. Εκεί γνώρισε κάποιον Chan Romero, ο οποίος ήξερε κιθάρα και τον οποίο παρακαλούσε ο Kostas να τον μάθει όπερ και εγένετο. Ταυτόχρονα ο Chan Romero ίδρυσε την δισκογραφική εταιρεία Warrior, φώναξε τον έφηβο Kostas και έκαναν την ηχογράφηση δύο τραγουδιών που κυκλοφόρησαν τότε σε 500 κόπιες με παραγωγό τον ίδιο, ως την πρώτη κυκλοφορία της εταιρείας Warrior.

Το 1967 ο Kostas άφησε πλέον το σχολείο καθώς βρήκε δουλειά στην Αιόβα ως κιθαρίστας σε μπάντα με αμοιβή 80-100 δολάρια την βδομάδα. Μετά από ένα χρόνο ξαναγύρισε σε άλλο γκρουπ στην Μοντάνα και η ζωή πλέον βρήκε το δρόμο της μέσα από την  country όπου έγινε γνωστός.

Δυστυχώς μπόρεσα να βρω μόνο το ένα τραγούδι από το 45αρι του το οποίο και ανέβασα να ακούσετε.

In December of 1947, when Kalliopi was sixteen it was arranged for her to marry Sawas Lazarides, my father; they, being the eldest of both families. In April of 1949, she gave birth to her only child, Kostas Lazarides. Kostas and his family immigrated to Montana from Greece when he was seven years old. He now has homes in Montana and Nashville, and aside from songwriting and performing, he enjoys hunting, fishing and raising vintage guitars on his "guitar ranch."

My first artist on the label was my paperboy," he said. There was this Greek kid named Kostas who used to bug me to teach him to play the guitar, so I did. We went into the studio and recorded "Something We Call Love" and the flip side was "Jane." I think we made about 500 of them - they got a lot of airplay, in Billings.

The American music he heard on the radio-the diverse late-`50s blend in which the rockish Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochran, and the folkish Burl Ives, were heard alongside very country performers such as Ferlin Husky and Kitty Wells-intrigued him, and his parents bought him a guitar. They also made him practice it.

In 1967, Kostas quit high school in his senior year (eventually getting his diploma via an equivalency test). He was hired as guitarist with a band, earning $80 to $100 a week. The job took him, he said, to ``such hot spots as Froggy`s Tavern in Storm Lake, Iowa,`` and eventually to Las Vegas, where he quit after a year or so to return to Montana to join another band.

Kostas received his first No. 1 Country hit with his first single release. The single entitled, "Timber I'm Falling In Love," was recorded by Patty Loveless. He also penned the songs "The Lonely Side Of Love," and "On Down The Line" for her follow-up albums which also reached Top 10. 

Kostas went on to write many more Top 10 singles including: "Heart Full Of Love," by Holly Dunn, "Turn It On, Turn It Up, Turn Me Loose," and "Nothing's Changed Here," by Dwight Yoakam, "Lord Have Mercy On The Working Man," by Travis Tritt, "Going Out Of My Mind" and "Love On The Loose, Heart On The Run,” by McBride and The Ride and "Life #9" by MartinaMcBride.

He also scored two more No. 1 country hits with Dwight Yoakam's "Ain't That Lonely Yet" and Patty Loveless' first Epic release, "Blame It On Your Heart," which was BMI's most performed country song of 1994. 

His songs have been recorded by Wynonna, Trisha Yearwood, Allison Krauss, Brooks and Dunn, Etta James, Vince Gill, George Strait, The Dixie Chicks, Jo Dee Messina, Marty Stuart, Conway Twitty, Emmylou Harris, The Bellamy Brothers, Sammy Kershaw, Tracy Byrd, The Mavericks, John Berry, Neal McCoy, Rick Trevino, Freddy Fender, Marie Osmond, Kelly Willis, Joy White, Buck Owens, Great Plains and PrairieOyster.
