SRC were part of the wave of Detroit-based heavy rock groups which emerged in the late sixties, and included bands like The Amboy Dukes and The MC5.
Originally from Birmingham, they started out as the Tremelos and later The Fugitives and issued four 45s (two on D-Town and two on Westchester) and an LP, The Fugitives At Dave's Hideout (Hideout HLP-1001) 1965. Three of their tracks are on the sixties compilation, Friday At The Cage A Go Go (Westchester 1005) 1965. Friday At The Cage A Go Go has recently been reissued under its alternate title Long Hot Summer on Hide The Sausage (HTS-001) 1989. As The Fugitives they have cuts on Oil Stains (Said Goodbye) and Glimpses 3 (On Trial). The Fugitives tracks on Mindrocker, Vol. 7 and Back From The Grave, 3 are by a different band.
SRC's debut album contained one stand-out track, Black Sheep, on which Glen Quackenbush's organ playing gave the band a similar sound to The Doors' Light My Fire. The track received considerable airplay from John Peel in England. However, the band failed to capture the interest of the American public at large and disbanded after two further good LP's.
Compilation appearances have included: Black Sheep on Rock A Delics (LP); Badazz Shuffle on Echoes In Time, Vol. 2 (LP), Echoes In Time Vol's 1 & 2 (CD) and Gathering Of The Tribe (CD); I'm So Glad on Turds On A Bum Ride Vol. 4 (CD) and Michigan Rocks Vol. 1 (LP); Marionette from their first LP can also be heard on Illusions From The Crackling Void. As Scot Richard Case you can find their competent, snarly version of Get The Picture on Michigan Mayhem Vol. 1 (CD), Sixties Archive Vol. 7 (CD) and Boulders, Vol. 2 (LP).
They also recorded a 45 in 1972 as Blue Scepter (Out In The Night/Gypsy Eyes) (Rare Earth 5040) - the 'B' side is on Echoes In Time, Vol. 1 (LP) and Echoes In Time Vol's 1 & 2 (CD).
